Drag Boat Racing - InCOLEherent 140 - Moody Blues 265

The day has come, Sam and I have agreed to put the 140 InColeherent boat into retirement. We are at the point where we are pushing the boat to the absolute limit and after 5 years have got our fill of 6 second 1/4 mile runs. Going all aluminum blown injected big block in a 400lb boat has been absolutely nuts and we somehow managed to get it back on the trailer every time and keep Sammy alive.

It’s been an absolutely brutal year for the sport - since Kyle passed in April, we’ve lost three more drivers, all of them directly competing with Sam in prior events. I posted about the 1986 season on the first page and I have to think 2024 feels like what it must have felt like then. Competing just no longer seems important when so much tragedy has transpired - we need a break.

Good news - we’ve been going hard on Moody Blues. Engine is all buttoned up and in the boat, plumbing done, wiring done, starter spun the engine over tonight. Need to wire the ignition system and put fuel to the carbs and it will be ready to fire for the first time in probably over 30 years. Throw in a drive line and we are heading to the lake for the naturally aspirated big block fun.

What a fun read... Just read the whole thread from beginning... As we know.. Once racings in your blood... Well you know the rest of the story..

We ,Grandson (rider) and I (mechanic) Have been heavy into Motocross racing all his life (started when he was 4, he's 32 now)... We've chased the races (Nationals) all over the US.

He is now a family man with a 2.5 yo daughter and a boy on the way... We quit chasing and just go occasionally now... But I think that will change when the kids get old enough (4 yo)

I've been turning wrenches for a racer since 1983 ...

 

Drive line in, prop shaft in, fuel tank fixed, alternator mounted and wired - it’s officially ready.

 

You plan on racing that up the Thames river? The steering wheel is on the wrong side.

 

Well - first day on the water with Moody Blues was everything we hoped for. Finally popped my flat bottom cherry and I’m definitely addicted.

Nice drone work... how'd it shake out? You get the starter repaired?

 

Threw our old starter from the race boat in and she fires with ease first time every time! That part worked great. We also got the carbs dialed - cranked up the idle a little and gave it a little more fuel for when it fires under load - it liked all those changes.

Only real hiccup we hit - we will need to be more vigilant on bolt checks. Toward the end of the day we were hauling ass up the canyon and the temp spiked fast after running cool all day. Puked oil out the valve cover breathers all over - it was awesome…

Thankfully we were able to ID the issue - turnbuckle linkage came off the back carb so the back 4 cylinders were fuel starved. We got it reconnected and running to cool it back down and I think we’re good. Probably take it back out next weekend with the families for the first time.

 

That thang will be some fun on the lake!!!! I'm sure you already posted this but what you got under the hood?

I knew this day would come - but honestly I expected it to be further down the road.

In Tom Brady fashion, the 140 boat is coming out of retirement and running the final race of the 2024 season in Parker, AZ Nov 1-3. Sam went to the October race to crew for a friend and he can’t stay away.

If anyone feels like coming out to Parker - the race is at the BlueWater Resort and Casino. This is the final event of the year and a combined race for 3 different race associations across the country so there should be a good number of boats out racing.

 

Went through the boat and fired it up for the first time in 6 months… like it ran yesterday.
