An owner on Reddit tried using Carista with a basic ELM327 adapter many of us have used in the past. Carista won’t connect (now) saying the adapter is defective. Tried mine which has worked perfectly and now I get the same error with the latest version for iPhone. Reading Carista FAQs, for iPhone they now only allow the ridiculously priced adapters of their own or those from OBDLink or the Kiwi3. Android still works on basic 3rd party adapters. Oh, and they raised their monthly subscription rate by 50% from $9.99 to $14.99 monthly. Appears the surge in 3rd Gen Tundra business has turned into Greed. Their new adapter is $70 too!!

It's my understanding that iPhone's will only work with Bluetooth 4.0 or higher. The ELM327 is Bluetooth 2.0. I have both a modern Android phone and an iPhone and can confirm that the ELM327 only works with Android. I purchased a cheap Bluetooth 4.0 OBDII dongle from eBay (~$20) and it works with iPhone for about 15 seconds before it drops the connection (it also does the same thing with the Android phone).

I do feel that charging a subscription for phone OBDII software is ridiculous and will never purchase (subscribe) to any vendor that want's to charge a monthly fee.

My cheap ELM327 worked fine with this same phone in Carista til sometime earlier this year.
