    Hi all,

Unfortunately a rock hit my windshield from a vehicle in front of me the other day, there were to many vehicles in front of me to know which one did it, as it was multi lane area of a busy road. The crack isn't that bad now, but I am sure I it gets hit again or I hit a big enough bump it's going to get worse, and I am not sure it will pass inspection come January.

I am just wondering if anyone knows off hand how much the windshield cost to replace given they have to take off all the electronic type stuff and reattach it after, not as simple as it used to be. Also does Toyota have to do it, or will any glass place be able to do it?

I am just asking before I go through my insurance carrier, if I can pay out of pocket rather than doing a claim I will.

    Thanks,

    T

It had to be good enough quality glass that the camera and such will not throw fits, plus there's recalibration. I'd bank on a minimum of $1000, but it could easily go higher.

Check w/your insurance.... this will usually fall under comprehensive and is often a $0 deductible and non-chargeable claim

Also, if you're cutting corners on pricing, there's a lot of glass out there right now that ain't worth a damn... So, don't assume it's all the same and just go w/the lowest bid...

    Alot of them
Find out if your insurance covers it. Find a local glass company and ask for OEM equivalent glass. It will be made by the same companies that make it for Toyota. Do not use Safelite. If you call your dealers collision repair center, they will tell you who they use for their glass work.

Depends on company and state. Glass coverage is frequently separate with its own deductible. It is for me.

My 2020 got a rock peck on my way home from the dealership. In May 2020. I had the rock peck filled in, but it still spread, but the crack doesn't cross my view and the sun never catches it in a way that blinds me. I'm not gonna get it replaced until another crack forms that crosses my view.

I did this recently, went thru insurance, only $100. I have a 2017, so no lane assist stuff.

I replaced my kids 2021 RAV 4 and that was $800 cuz all the calibration etc. I took it to dealer, and they sent me to their recommended glass guy. I bet newer Tundra would be the same

I'm on my third windshield. My truck likes to pick fights with rocks...

I use a local shop (part of a west coast chain). If you have sensors (like we do), they will ONLY replace your windshield with OEM branded glass. They do the replacement and the calibration.

I pay my $100 deductible and I'm set. Without insurance, it would have been $1400.

Same, I've used this exact kit 4 times on my Tundra from rock chips due to oil field road travel near Odessa. Sometimes you can't even see where the rock hit.

Thanks everyone for the tips, I will try the stuff recommended if I feel the need. Thankfully it is not in my field of view so as long as it will pass inspection I will just leave it alone until it gets bigger I suppose.

just had mine replaced from hail damage. The 736 was just the oem windshield. Mine is 2014 so no calibration that I’m aware of. But factory glass is not cheap….

Just another point, had mine replaced by safelite, insurance covered. But safelite gave me shit about the recalibration of the camera thing because my tires were not OEM size, and wouldn't do any recalibration, saying that the vehicle height had changed (10mm come on dude) Luckily it was fine and didn't throw a bunch of false warnings , CEL's etc.

Safelite has always done well for me. After reading a couple negative posts about Safelight I tried a competitor and was immediately disappointed by their quality of glass and workmanship. I’m sticking with safelite now.

I've heard similar complaints from others... the only way to combat this BS is to stop giving business to companies that want to give you every excuse in the book about why they won't, can't or might F it up  Unfortunately, most of these types of repairs and transactions are driven by insurance contracts and relationships w/various vendors and 'approved service facilities'...

Seems we are far beyond times when good mechanics and technicians would 'work the problem' and find resolution in spite of challenges. Don't get me wrong they are still out there, and when I come across them I make sure to compensate them well and refer business to them.
