Looking at grabbing a set of Trail Grapplers 295/70/18. They are down to 11-12 tread depth. Realistically how many more miles can I get out of them? Thanks!

That depends on a lot of factors, but I would consider them a little over half worn. You may get 30k miles out of them or 3k miles out of them depending on how and where you drive. I don’t get usable traction below 5/32’s; 2/32’s is the minimum legal tread depth but really anything below 4/32’s and you are asking for trouble on anything by warm, dry pavement at low speeds.

Those trail grapplers start at 19/32’s. Subtract 5/32’s and divide in half to get 7/32’s as a half way point. Subtract 7/32’s from 19/32’s and, IMO, the tires are half worn at 12/32’s.

I run all terrain tires instead of mud tires and usually get 3-4000 miles per 32nd of tread depth. If I had 6/32’s of usable tread depth available on my tires, I would expect to get another 18-24000 miles out of them. But that’s me and my driving habits/environment/demands.

This answer is amazing. Thank you so much! That's the biggest hold up is getting less than 20k miles out of them. If I can stretch 20k I'll be happy.

Another concern not mentioned yet is age of tire. If the previous owner has run those tires for 5 years (only averaging 5-6k a year) that rubber is going to be pretty hard and will be very slick on wet roads well before reaching the end of its “useable tread depth”

Is there anywhere on the tire that shows build date

Not that I am aware of. There could be a date code on them; I was just speaking from a general sense of the rubber compound hardening overtime particularly when exposed to UV/elements.

Ask the previous owner when he bought/ installed them. If they are ~2years old-ish, you're probably fine and will run out the treads (with avg 15k-18k/yr) before the rubber hardens significantly.

They are at a tire spot near me. Guy swapped them out for ATs. I can find out if they know when they were purchased

What state are you in? I "might" have some 295-70-18 Yokohama MT taking off in a month or 2 in Tennessee. Depends if i see any early black friday sales i like.

If that's an old school full-service tire shop, I'd see what he'd charge you to put some siping in those lugs. Otherwise you're gonna be spinning them anytime it rains on pavement. They look pretty shiny. If you're running mostly off road/dirt, you should be ok

I have 265/70/18 ridge grapplers at 12 that I'm considering trading straight up for them.

Keep the ridge grapplers unless you're on the dirt >60% of your driving.

I am looking to move up in size. I might just keep looking for a larger size of the ridge grapplers.

I'm in Memphis but I know Woodstock.
Likely I'll be visiting some people in Cartersville, Canton, Cumming area this winter.

Also, tires should have a build date on them. In a box near DOT will be 4 digit number. First 2 are week and 2nd 2 are year. Like 1821 would mean built 18th week of year 2021.

Understood, but don't sacrifice performance (and maybe even safety) just to have "more meat brah!"

Save your shekels and get some new RG's (if you're happy with your current set).

That's awesome, definitely let me know and if you do grab a new set I'm interested in those. What set are you running currently?

True, I have to go in 4H to get out of my driveway because of the slope so I can't risk not being able to get out of my driveway when it trains

I have the Yokohama Geolander g003 MT. 295/70-18.
I'm watching for a good sale so I can jump to 37s. Also looking for something quieter since work has me doing more highway miles now. Hoping to score some Toyo RT Trails. High hopes for November deals.
If you find a good deal for yourself, don't wait on me. The 37s are $$$$ so my wife might tell me no even if I do find a nice sale price.

You mentioned wet steep driveway. MTs are generally not great on wet pavement. These Yokos dig into a river bed or a field just fine but it's easy to get squirrelly on wet roads. That's kinda been my experience with all MTs so far anyway.

Not to be a complete buzzkill, but I would pass hard on those used tires then.
