Long time reader, first time poster. I’m looking at this green 2021 Tundra with 1794 trim. Dealer was initially asking $38k but came down to $31k.

I’m still not used to how crazy this used market is nor have I ever bought a Tundra before, so figured I’d get some opinions from those more familiar with the truck and market.

My gut is telling me $30k for a truck with 120,000 miles is still pretty crazy, but idk…

Why did they drop $7k so quickly. Get a trusted independent mechanic to look it over before pulling the trigger. That trucks been used.

That green and tan interior is such a fantastic combo, but yeah, dropping that much money, thats sketchy AF.

Yeah that was a bit of a red flag for me too. I ordered a lemon squad inspection because I’m way more tempted by that color combination than I should be lol.

If the inspection comes back with any real problems I’m gonna walk.

A 2021 with 120k. My 2014 has 120k. Like the above posts I would have a very well trusted mechanic look it over if you want to purchase. Looks like there is already a decent amount of rust. Im guessing been on the beach and towed a boat? Price seems high but that's just me.

Also the AS IS sticker in the front windshield is a big red flag for me.

Logical choice. In my opinion. Where was that truck located? Serious rust around those two cats in the photo.

Unless I’m misremembering, every car I’ve ever bought with more than 50,000 miles was sold as is.

Unless it was a CPO do dealerships typically warranty anything on sold vehicles with more than 100,000 miles?

South Carolina by the beach. Dealer is adamant it’s caked on mud but not doing much to provide assurances since I talked him down from his initial $39k ask

Thats hilarious, a truck with that mileage around here with that amount of "rust" would be considered showroom condition.

Yeah I’m with ya. I don’t love the amount of maybes involved with this one. I might be letting my love of the color combo bias my judgement more than I should.

That underside is not looking too good. I would pass due to it is a 2021 but already 120K miles, that's a tad too high for that short of time.
How does the carfax/information check out? Not saying that's the bible, but the pictures does raise quite a few red flags and I would be worried to drop even $22K for that. I am pretty sure that's rust on the cats, meaning it either seen salt, or sea water/boat ramp and owner never bother to risen it out after, which is bad for long term, and given it's location, i would say it is a hard pass unless the cats pictures are indeed mud and not rust, but I highly doubt that.

The only thing I can comment on is that what you are seeing on the exhaust around the catalytic converters is layers of fine mud. Doesn’t look like rust to me and I’m surrounded by the North Atlantic here on the coast of Canada. Seen lots of rust.

Underside looks great. Looks like mud from the limited pictures provided.

What is the maintenance history? Should have had plugs, coolant, trans fluid, diffs and xfer twice... and oil a bunch of times.

Would also disagree with those calling foul on a high mileage per year vehicle as if it means abuse. Have been through phases in life clocking 30-40k per year highway commuting. Maintenance history is more important that miles IMO.

If there is a full MX history, check for how many times brakes were done. Should be an indicator.

1 Owner ? Def check history and get a certified mechanic to look it over.

edit: for reference my 2016 Platinum (2nd owner) sold for 35k this year with 86k miles ...so seems like a good deal to me if all checks out. GL

I’m seeing brakes done once and with the exception of an occasional oil change recorded pretty much no other fluid changes show up on the service history.

Don't know what to say on this one. It'd all be conjecture....might as well:

    - Safe bet it needs coolant, spark plugs, and all diffs/t case done immediately

    - Hard to tell on oil; could have DIY'd or had it done at a small shop in between, or not....

    - Brakes at ~81k suggest high proportion of highway miles

    - All the tire replacements, suspension inspections, and bushing replacement may suggest unresolved front end alignment/geometry problems from the lift

How does the oil look? IF it looks clean, would feel better about the carfax not telling the whole MX story.

Any evidence of usual leaks? Any timing chain clicking or flutter on startup?

White or blue smoke on start?

Conjecture or not I really appreciate the insight. If the mechanic takes a look and is satisfied enough for me to buy it your comment gives me a great starting point for making sure the truck is bought back to a maintenance schedule.

That factory skid plate is mangled up. Definitely would check under that “caked in mud” on the cats, to make sure they are original.

Good eye. Could explain how the mud got on the cats...

Under close inspection it would be easy to tell if it's been offroad or mudding much.... the size of these trucks wheeling them can be compared to a walrus sliding over rocks on shore.

OP- good luck. It's a great looking truck but deserves some close scrutiny

I think I saw someone posts about this truck on reddit, that looks really clean, rust on Tundra frame usually popups on the seams, that frame looks minty, I'd get a PPI and if it's all good, jump on it.

Yeah that was me. I have an inspection scheduled for Monday. Still not sure if I’m happy with $31k but figured I’m intrigued enough to have a mechanic look it over on the off chance he says it looks great mechanically.

I look at the totality of the circumstances. The "as is" sign and an inexplicable large price drop taken with the fact that it has obvious off-roading modifications/adds...totality of the circumstances says "no" to me. The nagging feeling I get from looking at it is it has a higher likelihood of being thrashed off-road with all that.

Full diagnostic/inspection is a great idea and start, but I'd also be looking to see if all the factory stickers are under the hood and on the doors and looking at panel gaps, measuring paint thickness if possible, looking for parts that look brand new...

My Tacoma exhaust looked like that with cooked on mud. Looks like chunks packed on at back of trans too. Look closely figure out if it may have been submerged or just played in mud a lot. Open the air filter housing and check for signs of water ingestion there.

All that mud underneath plus bashed up skid plate suggest it played hard.

That truck would seriously tempt me too but it may be a risk.
