I have a TRD offroad so it comes with the engine skid / splash plate. First time oil change today and man was it giving me grief. It’s so clunky and the hooks weren’t clear to me where they need to line up. There are a set of hooks that go side ways and another set of hooks pointed towards the back of the truck. The side ways ones (circled in blue) I think I figured out the holes that they go into but the ones circled in red I’m at a loss. Do those hook into some holes?

The blue ones hook into slots on the bottom of the crossmember and the red ones rest against the front of it.

Thanks for the confirmation and pic! There are various slots throughout on the crossmember so I kept thinking the red hooks must go into one of them but nothing would align properly. Ah so it just rests against it.

Modify your skid plate as shown in the picture (cut slots in two places). Bend over the hooks since you won't need them anymore. Just loosen (don't remove) the two bolts where the slots are, shift the skid plate forward and disengage and lower. When replacing, position the skid plate a bit forward and slide it back so the two bolts slip into the slots and that will hold it in place to put in the rest of the bolts. Lastly, tighten the two bolts where the slots are.

Interesting mod and makes sense to me. The stock J style hooks are so clunky and not a clean design.

I've removed and replaced the skid plate several times with this mod, much easier than before. First time might be a little bit of a struggle to line things up but you will quickly get the hang of it.

If you have the MotivX kit, you won't even need to drop the skid plate. There's enough room to gain access from the side to get in and work.
