Exactly. There are cells at the bottom of the calculators that show Additional Payment. The bottom screen shot shows the $2K being applied at the start of the loan.

It's probably info overload but I wanted to include a screen shot of the calculators and the inputs, for proof of concept.

ONLY if the interest on the loan is less than the potential yield on investing that cash.

I don't get it either, but it's a fact. Maybe a smart person can explain it to us.

It hasn't been in decades. We have made some purchases with 0 interest, furniture if I recall correctly.

And if you use a sinking fund then you pay cash and have interest work for you instead of against you.

A sinking fund is used to set aside money to pay for future expense. If you set money aside and let it accrue interest (or grow in a conservative money market mutual fund) then it grows with the added interest meaning you will have more than your principal invested (saved) to make the later purchase. Interest works for you.
If you get a loan to buy now what you cannot afford then you must pay interest that fights against you.

I already had the 640’s stock length suspension (275mm front/300mm rear) resprung and revalved about 4~5 years ago. It rides like a flying carpet and literally floats over rocks at lower speeds, and can easily handle 4 to 5 foot high landings at higher speeds. Like it’s pretty darn amazing…even with the fuel tank completely full (close to 7 gallons). I literally couldn’t ask any more from it, so i brought my suspension tuner all the parts needed to extend the travel another 25/20mm (to 300mm and 320mm). It doesn’t sound like much, but that extra inch-ish of travel does make a huge difference. The longer suspension is currently back on the bike, but it might be another year before i get around to finishing up the build.

We’ll all get to the point somewhere in life where we decide not to ride anymore. Kayaking sounds like a great way to have a fun workout! Unfortunately i get cold super easy, and even thinking about being out on the water gives me the shiver bumps.

Yep, I get all that. As long as you don't withdraw the interest gained, correct?

I don't have much, but what we do have saved I have in a 6 month CD that I let roll over. Totally safe and only tied up for 6 months at a time in case I ever need it.

I've never heard the terminology sinking fund, but I find myself constantly sinking money into savings for a future purchase. As noted above that I pay a car payment to myself into my savings when I don't have a car payment. Then when I buy a car, I use those funds towards a loan I can pay off in under 2 years. But it looks like I've been doing it all wrong. The mmmf play is genius.

I was making the bed up earlier (usually the wife's job) and after putting on the clean sheets, I flipped the blankets back up. One main blanket plus a second and an electric blanket on the wife's side. It's still summer and 100+ here, the AC is set at 75 and I run a fan all night. Yet the wife has an second blanket plus an electric one. WTF is wrong with women?

Now you've opened Pandora's box. How often do y'all actually change sheets? Who usually does it? My house personally, maybe once a month. Could be myself or the wife. I do a lot of the other laundry though because I don't like certain things dried. I'm usually just to lazy to change the sheets out. :anonymous:

Usually at least weekly and she does it. I do the laundry on Fridays after I get home from work, but she does all the folding/hanging/putting it up.

I always wanted one of those 640's before I bought the 690. So much torque in them and I can see why you'd put longer travel on it if you're riding trails with 4/5 foot drops. I was never that daring to move fast enough to manage that on such a big bike. Mtn bike maybe, but definitely not a dirt bike, let alone an adv touring bike. The whitewater trips made rafting and kayaking so much more fun than a bike for me though. Once you push off from a shore and float into a solitary canyon for a few nights or longer no sport as far as adrenaline wise has ever given me such a high. Every year I paddle my raft or kayak as much as I can. I'm actually about to drive to Oregon on Monday to disappear into the rogue river gorge for 5 nights next week. I can hardly wait to run it as it'll be a first descent for the entire crew going. 2 rafts and 3 kayaks. Here's some pics of trips I did this year. Minus Peru that was 2019

F***’n A tell me about it - lost $1,500 on one of my Fidelity accounts over the past 10 days

I will say, having a savings account with Ally Bank has been fantastic. It’s currently at 4.20% APY.

Between that and paying/purchasing what I can with a TD cash back credit card (I do not revolve), it racks up to +$500 extra month!

That's a nice apy at ally. Cash back cc's are the best. Every monthly bill goes on it. Paid of monthly. No brainer there.
