Think I'm between the Rough Country tri fold hard tonneau cover VS Bakflip MX4 model. Anyone have any input between these 2 models? RC appears to be priced around $750 which is much lower than $1100 for Bakflip. Anyone have feedback on which one may be best?

I can't remember specifics but it seems like I've heard complaints about the quality of the RC tonneaus.

To be fair I've heard some complaints about BAK too, seems kinda' hit/miss.

My only experience is with my MX4... I'm going on 2 years in and I'm VERY happy with it thus far and I would buy it again if doing it over.

I've heard mostly positive things about Lomax and Gator tonneaus also.

Got the MX4 Bakflip on my truck and it works just fine. If I was to pick any negatives, it would be the seals on the edge will occasionally bunch up at the pivot points but it's easily fixed.

I had the MX4 on my Tacoma. It was really great and steardy, yet lightweight and never had any issues. I did break a clip once that held one of the rods along the rail when completely shut, but I easily ordered replacements on Amazon for $4. It was very sleek, which I liked.

Wow, that's high praise coming from our resident industry expert, thank you!

Yeah, I'm SUPER happy with how it all came together.
    Functional, comfortable, and pretty stylish.
Fits my lifestyle and makes life much easier.

Just added a rack in the middle for the new outrigger.

I have had the RD tri fold hard cover on my truck since late 2021 with no complaints. It is not 100% water tight, but i have a set of bed bars on the truck that caused me to modify the installation.

I have had the MX-4 and loved it in the past. I just purchased the Rough Country Tri-fold. It's $600 less than the MX-4 at the LEAST. I want to try it out and figure I can buy 2 Rough Country's for same price. I use the expression "buy once and cry once" for my hunting gear like binoculars. You normally get what you pay for and well built costs money. We will see if this holds true for tonneaus. The Rough County is simply not heavy duty where the MX-4 can states it can hold 400 lbs on it, the RC is more like 45-50. That being said if you don't need to put weight on top of the cover I think the RC is worth a shot. I will keep you posted after install later this week.

Jbedatsky any updates since you installed the rough country? I had the mx4 and liked it but one of the bolts must of come loose and while in the filled up position it got lifted and thrown around the side of my truck... Needless to say in looking to replace it and the RC option is only $700. I wasnt totally impressed with the water proof performance of the $1200 MX4 so figured I would try RC unless it's quality is way less.

I love my tonneau 99% of the time.
The 1% is when i have to load something higher than the bedrails and that is long like a snowmobile or quad. This may or may not apply to you but mine tri-folds into a a roughly 15" panel that lays right behind the rear window blocking cargo from being able to load right up to the front of the box.
The next tonneau i buy will be a model that folds up and is able to vertically stand right behind the rear window so i'm not forced to remove it every time i have something larger to load in the bed.

I love the RC and have no complaints since I installed it. I love its much easier to open. I would definitely buy one again for cost savings.

Thanks for the feedback, you made my decision easy.

One suggestion I can give back for everyone out there with a fold up cover... Check those two main bolts that hold the cover down every once in a while to avoid the thing from flying off while in the up position. I've learned my lesson and I'm be putting a second nylon locking nut against the plastic hand turn Knob. Looking at rough country's install instructions they've already added a secondary wing nut, so I'm guessing I'm not the first person this has happened to.
