I'm trying to determine if my truck jumped time without draining coolant and breaking it down as you would to change the timing belt. I've got the two top timing belt covers loose where I can see the cam timing marks

if you match up the cam timing marks then where should the crank / dampener be on the timing marks located on the lower TB cover?

    0? TDC?

EDIT: for future reference in case anyone runs across this And has the same question. These are the images from what @shifty` linked below which answered my questions:

Perfect, thanks. I guess I search for the wrong terms because I could never find anything like that.

EDIT: this is not an issue for now. I got the serpentine belt off. Looks like I will have to tear down at least part of the front end and take that tensioner pulley off to address this issue. But now I'm moving forward to check the timing

    Orig:
Cant get serpentine belt off. Trying to turn the tensioner counter clockwise, but the nut/bolt is just spinning

Clockwise. Serp belt tensioner is reverse-thread, IIRC, so CCW rotation should be tightening the fastener. are you sure that thing was installed fully, or did you just not tighten it? Maybe this is the source of your problem? (1m30s if it doesn't autoplay in that spot)

Yes I thought it was reverse thread and he shows that in the video.

However, I'm turning it counterclockwise in order to remove the belt, but it just keeps spinning. If it was loose, that should tighten it. But it just keeps turning.

That's bizarre. I can't imagine they changed the model? I mean, I know some changes happen over the years, like changing pulley diameter and position (as a result of changing the diameter), but I've never seen any manufacturer change the fundamental function of one.

I wonder if you just found your issue? Maybe the THUMP you felt was the pulley freezing up and the fastener snapping? And now it's just spinning in place?

There are indeed two tensioner assy's for the 2UZ. The older one has a larger idler wheel (~4" as a recall) and the newer design has a smaller idler wheel. I learned this a few years ago when I was try to replace mine, and I kept getting the smaller one (I needed the larger one). I think the change happened midyear 2004, which is why I was having difficulty with the right part.

Right, but with the newer style, smaller diameter (2.5" IIRC?) wheel not pivot CCW?

It should still pivot the same way to release tension to remove the belt, but I don't own that one so I've never seen it, so I can't say for sure. The "Belt Noise" TSB (attached) is where the change originated.

I tried to get underneath last night and take the serpentine belt off. It was easier to get to that tensioner pulley from underneath. I finally decided to wait because I didn't have my big light with me. It was not bright enough outside.

i'm thinking I might have gotten my directions mixed up from underneath and turned it the wrong way (clockwise) last night. So maybe it's not a bolt but some form of nut and bolt and that is why it is just spinning? Feels pretty smooth and solid. I don't think it's been stripped.

I cautiously report what appears to be great news. It does not appear to have jumped time and thereby bricking the engine.

Please see @shifty` s link above or my post above with the pics of the correct alignment for the Crankshaft relative to the cam timing marks

Ignore the timing alignment marks on the belt. It has already been running and is purely coincidental that they are in these pics

The crankshaft mark is at an awkward angle and difficult to see because I didn't remove the fan, fan shroud, radiator etc. it's a little easier to tell in person that it appears to be on the mark
    IMG_7851.jpg

    Driver side cam timing mark:
    IMG_7849.jpg

    Passenger side cam timing mark:

    IMG_7848.jpg A

A little concerned about how far the timing belt shifted forward on passenger side, but it appears to be within the ridge on the pulley (not pictured)

but that wouldn't explain why it suddenly would not run, even though the starter was turning the engine over normally

Apparently it was stripped. I bought the tensioner and the pulley in a kit and it was already mounted to the tensioner so it is definitely the right bolt

pretty odd for it to strip that quickly

need to find the right brand to replace (edit: Dayco is what came with the Aisin kit and in stock locally)
