Could i have gotten a faulty pump or gasket? is an AISIN Water pump from Amazon. came in AISIN packaging and was unopened. TOYOTA logo is scratched off.
Small leak coming from the bottom of the water pump.
What could be the issue? Loose bolt not clamping down on the gasket? Bad Gasket? need RTV?

Ugh sorry... That pump is such a pain to install.

I had the same problem because I did a poor job installing a hose clamp. I had to take everything apart to redo it.

    Good luck.

When it comes to Toyota/Lexus, I always purchase OEM parts. Been down that shit show before and on a job like this...you only want to do it once every 60-100k miles.

The problem could be any of the reasons you mentioned, hard to diagnose from just pictures. One thing I can say with certainty though is to never buy any important parts off Amazon, tons of fake parts there. Good luck.

Well as I said before, I wish you good luck fixing the leak, even with the part with the scratched off name.

:DBest tips I can offer because I really want you to be successful and not have to do this job again.

    -take it back apart.
-clean surfaces well and make sure no scoring of the mating surfaces.
-install new gasket and a new pump. I by OEM for my truck cuz I drive it to work and my boat cuz no way I’m getting towed to the dock cuz the jungle site. But I use buffed parts all the time on my VW Passat but that is a toy and I have a truck that can tow it home.
(I do not ever recommend RTV unless specified by manufacturer or you have issues with mating surfaces. Ex. during installation the matting surfaces were damaged. Then it’s only needed on the damaged section)
-use loctite medium strength or permatex medium strength thread locker. And torque to factory specifications. This will give good hold and keep vibration form loosening bolts.
-a paint marker can be used or liquid paper to mark what bolts you have torqued so you don’t miss. Take it slow and mark one at a time.

good luck and sorry your having to do the job twice. :annoyed:

Hopefully the problem is obvious when you start breaking back into this job.

I did something similar on my Lexus IS350. Ordered pump online from someplace. Can't remember where. Pulled my factory one off...didn't match up. It was close, but it wouldn't have worked. Returned. Car still apart in garage.

Went to local auto parts store and purchased a water pump and gasket. Now the gasket was paper and the factory one was metal. Installed. Leaked after
    5 k miles.

I finally ordered a factory water pump kit. Installed and 70k miles later it is still working 70k miles later.
