Circling back to my oil leak on the RAV4.

$15 AT-205 Re-Seal Stops Leaks, 8 Ounce Bottle

AT-205 didn't help at all from what I can tell. Still leaking from the rear main seal I think.

On another note, would anyone replace their water pump proactively? The Rav4 has a timing chain, so I've never touched that or the water pump. It has 157k miles. Sounds like a job I would have done at a shop.

 

Nope. Just a need to burn some PTO in case they try to cut short my 4 week combo PTO and Holiday time in December. Most likely some organization and some cleaning when I’m not off visiting others during the week.

 

Perfect time for some wrenching or rust free 1GT shopping.

 

Huh. I wonder if it's not the RMS? Are there any seams/gaskets above it? I'm sure it's a bitch to look at the back of the engine.

Just discovered that in the middle east you could buy a 100 series Land Cruiser with a 2UZ and 5 speed manual. Which means that in theory one of us could get a OEM Toyota flywheel/clutch/bellhousing/gearbox/etc that would bolt right up to our V8s. Huh.

Daydreaming about a SR5 RCLB with a V8, 5 speed, and manual Tcase. That would be the greatest thing ever.

Edit: the Tcase they come with has the front driveshaft on the passenger side. So it might not be a direct swap. But still.

Correct. My question was whether or not it should be replaced as preventative maintenance. The Tundra is the only vehicle I've ever replaced a water pump on.

 

I do have to take off my bumper and put on those brackets for the splash guards. I also need to see if the local salvage yard can find me a used skid plate in 1/2 decent shape.

I may also try my hand at loosening the fan bolts to see if doing my timing belt is ANY possibility for me. Rusty bolts suck.

 

At 160k miles, if never replaced, I’d want to do that and the t-stat. Both are wear items and critical components. I have faith in you.

Rethinking the 285s. Pulling the camper up to the lake makes me think the bigger heavier tires are gonna be too much. If I go 285s, I gotta start the slippery slope of mods. Regear, headers, whatever. So looking like another set of 265/75/16s.

 

I'll be curious to see how much worse my truck pulls with them. EDIT: But these 285/70r17 c-rated Wildpeak AT3 only weigh 4lbs more than my Baja Legend EXP in 275/70r17 e-rated beasts so not sure I'll see much performance change. (59lb vs. 63lb IIRC)

 

My FIL sent me home from OH with a tub of miscellaneous tools. He buys storage units at auction and ends up with some good, some bad.


Some these things I don't recognize. Anyone know that this is? Has a hole for oil like a jack.

I’m looking at 41lbs vs 56lbs per corner. Plus the loss of mechanical advantage and increase in rolling resistance. I’m already 2nd gear up some of the hills coming here.

 

Pneumatic hole punch. Used for punching holes in sheet metal.

That Sears batt charger is from Taiwan days, I believe, so should still be solid. We had similar, used the trickle/slow charge function regularly.

 

The hope punch doesn't seem to work. Might need oil or air purged.

That looks like a handle of some sort, used for a press, or vice, or something else with a square-rod as the center piece. Did you find any tools in the batch that use a ½" - 1" square steel rod?

EDIT: It may be for a hexagonal steel rod, actually, based on the angles there. If they were right angles, I'd think square rod. Given it's roughly 120°, makes more sense it would spin down to grab something steel and hexagonal.

 

Looks like an adjustable wrench, I've seen a couple like that.

That could be it. It does adjust. Don't think I'll keep it. I picked out the stuff I wanted, and listed the rest on marketplace for $15. I've learned not to offer anything for free but if someone shows up and is pleasant I'll just give it away. Anything free brings out the mouth breathers.

 

With VVTI, LSD and 285's... You'll be fine. You're going to love em.

I never longed for more power until I got into crawling. And that's with 295's

 

I think it's worth it having 285's but I also don't do any towing. I lost some power, but I like they way they look. Someday I may re-gear. Not a high priority for me right now.

This weekend is going to shit. While I was sorting through those tools this wet spot appeared on my ceiling. 2nd leak we've had in two weeks. I just cut a hole but I can't see where it's coming from.

Two weeks ago water started backing up in your kitchen sink while we did laundry. It also leaked into the floor which is the basement ceiling. I had a plumber snake the lines and that solved that issue. Now it's leaking on the complete opposite end of the house. I may have to open the hole up more.

 

Leaks are the worst. My windshield leaked bad for a year. It would let in water to the sunglass holder and drain into the cupholders. Definitely the most convenient leak, but that thing pissed water. Sometimes it would happen in cold rain while taking a turn and would piss cold water all over me!
I got the windshield replaced and now it has a small leak in the top driver corner of the windshield, by the A-pillar and headliner. I can't find it and the windshield guy couldn't find it.

 

I just took off my 265/75-16 BFG AT for the rest of the summer. I installed my spare set of mundane looking 215/80-16 (which is equal to the same height as the optional 245/70-16 stock sized tires). Tell you what, it’s easy to bald a tire on asphalt with those 215’s and 4.10 gears! My highway cruising speed doesn’t seem to be affected much, but the towing is waaaay noticeably better.

 

I need to get another set of wheels.

 

If you have the space to store them, then definitely yes! I found my Patrick rims on craigslist list for $180. I recently saw another set for $100.

 

Awesome! I can't wait to get my 4.10's installed. Hopefully this month. But I'll be running 265/60r18, which is the same size as the 265/65r17 my truck came with.
