New guy here - 2013 Sequoia bought recently

When I engage the 4WD HI on relatively level pavement at, say, 30 MPH, the indicator light goes solid and the 4WD engages in a couple of seconds. That is what I observe on the FJ and Tacoma we also have in the family.

But, if I engage the 4WD on a rougher dirt road at maybe 5-10 MPH, it takes several MINUTES or more to engage.

Any ideas? I feel like it is getting ample time to sync up.

It probably hasn't been engaged in a long time, keep doing it and it should get better.

Some people set a "use it or lose it" reminder once a month for it.

Probably could check the transfer case fluid and front diff fluid, and, as said above, use it regularly or it will stop working, The solenoids need regular exercise to stay limber and useful

All fluids checked or replaced since we bought it. I try to engage the 4WD weekly on our vehicles. The Sequoia was slow to change when we got it, and has gotten better. I am perplexed why the slow-speed rough-road engagement is so dramatically different from the medium-speed smooth road engagement.
    Thanks!

As per owner's manual, on our 2020 TRD PRO the gearing change has to be done while stationary and in Neutral. I don't know if that applies to yours.

Thanks! I just checked the 2013 manual, and shifting from 2HI to 4HI and back is allowed at under 62 MPH. Shifting from 4HI to 4LO requires the truck to be stopped and in neutral.

The requirements may be different for the 2020 TRD PRO.
