Hey all. So. This happened recently. I am uninsured. But I am also a die hard do-it-yourselfer. I literally taught myself-w a lot of you tube bandwidth- how to fix just about every aspect of home maintenance and renovation and turned it into a business. I’ve worked on a lot of my vehicles in the past and I have a very keen eye for detail. This one is going to be a test for sure. I have a limited budget so I’m mostly doing back yard mechanic work with a tree, a come along and a 10 ton hydraulic pump. I have been searching these thread diligently to find the answers to my uncertainties. I am thankful that all you guys are so forthcoming with information. So thanks in advance and wish me luck. PS. Mf fired right up and drove right after this. I’m on day 2 of working on her. I’ll keep pics updated.

That right there is one of a multitude of reasons not to run around without insurance. I hope nobody was hurt.

As for the truck, that looks pretty well totaled. Hard to tell the condition of the frame from these photos but it sure looks like it could be bent.

Pull all the broken plastic and front bumper off of there and take some more pictures. maybe we can get a better handle on the extent of the damage.

Next I would put together a spreadsheet with parts costs on everything you need before you get started.

It’s going to be extremely pricey to fix. If you’re not in a position to pay for the insurance I don’t think you’re going to be in a position to pay for the parts and frame straightening. I may be off base here, but a spreadsheet can very easily answer that question for you.

You might be better off parting it out and recouping what you can.

I thought it was illegal to roll uninsured? Or was this not involving another person, their property, their vehicle, or the Po Po's.

Even with the damage that is a sick truck, love that color and year.

Good luck. Go buy insurance. Recommend not driving until you do. I spy something red & blues, good luck in court.

Dear lord stop driving with no insurance. Also appears the passenger quarter panel had previously been replaced, so not this trucks first rodeo. The passenger side damage is the most concerning. Appears to have significant intrusion into the engine compartment and wheel well. Lots of subframe damage and likely actual frame damage. Truck is probably a total loss. And you with no insurance to recoup any of the value of that. Parting it out, or finding a non-running truck cheap to swap your good parts into may be the only way. Tough lesson to learn.

Maybe when he stated he was uninsured I'm hoping he meant he had liability only. If I'm wrong the flaming is just.

Trying hard not to judge, but I can't stand uninsured drivers and we have a plethora of them here - part of the reason rates are stupid here. I know of two campus coworkers who got hit by uninsured drivers and all those idiots got were tickets. In the meantime, the insured drivers will have to pay higher premiums and have diminished values of their vehicles.

Yeah, no excuse to run without insurance I don't care what the excuse is.

Did that hit mostly miss the bumper? The frame might be intact?

there’s some pretty good rust buildup where the radiator support is folded. How long has the truck been sitting?

Those tires were toast a long time ago and by the looks of them, there’s other issues in the suspension that need to be addressed.

Who’s going to make and weld that support back on the frame?

This is going to get expensive quickly.

Here in NH insurance is not required. I choose to be insured however. Would have a hard time knowing I wasn’t. I have however in the past not carried collision or comprehensive on a vehicle due to the value of the vehicle. So quite frankly if this is his vehicle and his accident with no other property involved I guess that’s his gamble and he “won/lost”? Idk.

I just had an accident in my first gen on the passenger corner as well. On a scale of 1 to 10 mine was about a 3. Yours looks like a 10.... The core support and inner fender structure on your truck is severely damaged. That is harder to pull out and straighten than you would think. Everything bolts to that structure, things need to be almost perfectly straight with that structure for everything else to line up, fender, headlight mounts, bumper, etc. Yours is completely ripped off below the radiator. That frame rail appears to have damage too. Good luck trying to make things line up. In my opinion that truck is toast.

I keep full coverage on my vehicles until the value drops below 5000.00.

This is another reason a third party pre purchase inspection is so important.

You think uninsured drivers were a problem before the latest price increases? Just wait.

My state has financial responsibility laws but they don't require proof of being financially responsible. "Just sign here" is what the DMV tells you.

It's a joke. A bad one and those that actually do have insurance are the brunt of that joke. Now I'm pissed.

Really hoping this was a one vehicle accident. I agree with the above statements about running uninsured. Been on the receiving end of too many hit and runs to ever think that's okay.

That really isn't true in NH. The driver needs 100,000.00 in their bank account set aside or a bond to meet state requirements.

Speaking from experience, that isn't enough insurance to cover anything.

Why would someone with 100k liquid dollars tie up that money in a bond to not pay insurance? I also speak from experience on this and paying insurance bi-annually is way cheaper and the money can be used in other investments.

    IMG_5230.png

Now Virginia is messed up on insurance requirements.

Two more states I won't be visiting or living.

Looks like VA thought you might be interested in living there. As of July 1st 2024 they made changes to the law requiring at least liability insurance. Wow...$20k minimum property damage.

I seen that after posting, but I agree. 20K dollars is barely a used Corolla these days.

We were under insured once, and that will never happen again. We will have to total a Bugatti to run out of insurance again.

    Nooooooo!!!

    I don't want to total a Bugatti.

Funny story, while practicing to get my oldest her drivers license hours, she got a little closer than I would have liked to a brand new 2024 Z06 Corvette.

We are up there too but maybe the front fascia of said Bugati. It's really rather affordable to increase limits and higher cost can be easily be offset by a $1,000 deductible. My worry is to lose my home, two cars and travel trailer in one fell swoop. $5 grand would be an ouchie requiring at least a kiss to make it better.

It cost us under 8.00 a month to move from 300k to 500k across the board. Adding a 1.5M umbrella is 360.00 or 30.00 a month. With teen drivers...a must. I always carry 1000.00 deductibles. Math doesn't work out to do 250/500.00 deductibles for us. I use insurance about once every ten years.

Depending on state laws, you won't lose your home unless you own 80% or more of it (which a good portion do). My last house I was in that situation. Our next home will be mortgage free and put into an irrevocable trust for this purpose.

I said required…I should have said “mandatory”

    That’s the rule…he’s the reality…
Because it isn’t mandated ie a stipulation for license or registration like in other states there are many that gamble without it and do not have the necessary proof of financial responsibility. I’ve only lived in NH. Is uninsured motorists coverage consistent from state to state?

State of Ohio. I have been randomly selected two different times. :duh:

Any vehicle owner who fails to show proof that financial responsibility (auto insurance) was in effect at the time his/her currently registered vehicle was chosen in the Random Selection Program will lose driving and registration privileges until all reinstatement requirements are met. The Ohio BMV randomly selects 5,400 registered vehicles per week to provide proof of insurance for a selected date. If you fail to show proof of insurance, your license could be suspended.

Damn! I forgot all about those letters. I've got two myself. On the second one I sent back a nasty letter basically telling them they were barking up the wrong tree and I was getting real tired of it. Fully expected to get "randomly" picked again real quick but haven't seen another.
