. I think people can be taught to moderate and parents need to teach their kids the trait.

I agree with the rest of your comments…I just think the phone is a symptom and not the cause.

Interesting. The design? I actually checked their website this morning before making my post and was surprised it was more reasonably priced than I expected.

Whatever this forum told me to do
Absolutely. we agree. the phone is the symptom. (delivery method)

the cause is the ability to so easily manipulate human habits.

software is written to smack your brain.

and folks are very easily manipulated (lazy).

the nuclear family is devastated by social media.

only the tough/smart folks can navigate thru this war on the minds.

reminds me of the book "the power of habit". it taught me gobs about human nature.

I used to visit Appleton WI regularly as a child. Not sure what state it's in today but to drive through it for a good deal on a trailer seems safe enough. He'll you drove through Vegas for a bike, so I can't see Appleton being a bad idea. Plus you could load up on some grade A curds.

I'm not sure I follow your fallacy leading from parents not being parents is actually being abusive. But I do agree with you in that not parenting, or gentle parenting as you call it, is a huge problem for the youth in our communities. They are not being challenged and in life we all experience challenges. If you don't have the tools to manage or cope you'll just be a mollusk on our system. Adding nothing and taking what you can. This then becomes the mega snowflake edition generation if the trend continues.

    Good analogy.

this summer my daughter has been learning how to captain a raft through class III whitewater. Her first run down she was a little mad at herself for not being "pro" and not running really clean lines. She had some bumps into rocks and we hit a canyon wall that we had to Highside to prevent the raft from flipping. She was emotionally burdened by her bad lines. After the debrief of what she could do better was over and what she learned about her choices that lead to her mistakes she looks at me and says, do we have enough time to run it again today?

I guess my long winded point is this.
The #1 goal of being a parent should be to create a critically thinking member of our society. No matter what lessons we use, our kids should grow up thick skinned and willing to put in the work to fly once we kick them out of the nest.

It's good to see a lot of other commonalities out there still doing the good work of raising kids to cope and blossom from challenges and failures. It's not all doom and gloom even with the amount of snowflakes there are in our world.

I am sitting in a 60 minute staff meeting and it took 45 minutes for each manager to do their “shoutouts”. Everyone gets a trophy. So much wasted time for this generation that needs constant, external “positive” feedback.

    Love this.

My wife and I aren't parents yet. We are so excited to have kids in the future, but we are sorrowful to witness how the adolescent generations are being raised. She sees it daily as a teacher, with students and parents: the lack of intentionality and interaction, rampant selfishness, entitlement, and apathy.

We need men to be good men, good men to be good husbands, good husbands to be good fathers, good fathers to raise strong children, strong children to become good men and good women, and good men and women to become good husbands, wives, fathers, and mothers. I wholeheartedly believe the dissolution of the nuclear family is how we discover the end of society.

I'm super encouraged to read through this thread to see like-minded individuals living it out. We're not in that season of life yet, but this all gives hope that the doom-and-gloom and victim mindsets around us aren't the victors.

This is definitive expression of becoming old. When "kids these days" statements are being muttered...

Even with the influence of the phone and social media this is the route problem. Some parents are too damn lazy to adapt to the current environment.

In the process of doing my rear seat delete on the '21, and I have to say I'm a bit frustrated that the interior of the rear bulkhead is just kinda covered w/some gray thin fabricky crap

The interior trim panels turn the corner from the sides to the rear bulkhead and then just end....

I know, I know, when the seats are in place you don't see that... but either way what harm is there in spend the extra $5 for the last plastic panel to finish it off and maybe reduce to road noise!!!!

The rear seats of the '08 are completely different; instead of the bottoms flipping up, the top folds forward and the seat assembly slides on tracks. This system is soooo much nicer; the rear bulkhead is finished; the back of the rear seats are finished in hard plastic so when you drop them down and slide the set up forward, you have a nice surface to work with...

Sorry, just thought I'd steer this ship back to truck stuff... but, I guess I'm still on a bit of a rant:rant:

Ok, time for bed now. I've got to work on a storage idea for the rear seats and decide how I'm going to handle trimming the rear bulkhead out and finishing my platform

Sounds like you may have to go full tilt. Pull the carpet and any trim panels. Get some sound deadening material and put it everywhere. Replace carpet and trim panels. Add new carpet over the deadening on the bulkhead behind the rear seats. Build your platform for the pups and be done with it. Maybe add a sub in the process somewhere to grind out that deep bass you like too.

That may be true but I kind of like that people at my current company take the time to recognize others when they've helped out or gone above and beyond. Very different culture from my previous company where the goal was to climb the ladder as fast as possible, regardless of how many people you had to stab in the back to do it.

The smartphone’s influence on our lives cannot be overstated, for sure. We have game-ified aspects of our daily lives that provide no real progress toward anything at all. It feels like progress and gives us a dopamine reward, but it’s nothing. It’s vapor; chasing after the wind. Exhibit A:
    IMG_5159.jpg
But even the dopamine-chasing gameification of meaningless amusement was born out of a longer-standing trend.

Ever since what—the Industrial Revolution?—progress has brought with it convenience and comfort. So much so, that we view the them as synonymous. But we are literally becoming weaker, dumber, less fertile, with less musculature, under-developed jaws, and messed up teeth.

We chase comfort as the ultimate good—to our demise. Look at any footage of society pre-2000. People are mellow, content, and happy to sit and be. Look at footage from pre-1970. Everyone is thin as a rail. Look at footage from the 40s and 50s. A man with a high school education could buy a house and feed a family of 5 with one job.

Kinda seems like as a species, we’re in a race to the bottom in several metrics.

My kids are a bit younger than most of yours so still trying to figure some of this stuff out. But my wife has finally stopped giving the 3 year old whatever she asks for whenever she asks for it, so that helps.

For now, we're just working on stuff like sitting at the dinner table together as a family and talking to each other or "you took those toys out so it's your responsibility to clean them up before bed".
