Nitpicking, but a long block is not ready to install out of the crate. Probably be reusing things like the intake and this that and the other from the old engine. Seems very complicated to me with a TTV6. Had to buy a reman'd long block 5.7l, that was a pretty penny. $6250 for the long block then apx $9k labor to get the blown engine out and swap in the reusable ancillary bits and pieces from the blown engine (plus miscellaneous parts). The 5.7 is a simple uncomplicated engine compared to a TTV6.

So, if one is willing to wait it out until they get the fix ironed out, Toyota is footing a pretty hefty bill. Best of luck to you 3g'rs.

How’d you kill a 3UR? Valve spring failure?

User error, not even 100k miles on it. Oil change done, CEL popped up immediately after oil change, CEL was ignored. Three weeks later it throws a rod. I didn't have a chance to look it over, dealer said everything was ruined from short block to heads and camshafts.

QUOTE="Terndrerrr, post: 3680602, member: 32965"]I’ve spent quite a bit of time in one. The only fun thing is seeing 25 mpg on the dash. What is not fun is dropping the transmission to replace the oil pump belt. This is scheduled maintenance at 150k or 200k depending on whether you’ve got the redesigned belt or not.

Not an issue for you, as you probably won’t keep it half that long.[/QUOTE]

I’d label the babymax “enjoyable” vs fun. It pulls hard, diesel torque, diesel purr, is surprisingly peppy, and yes the mpg.
    IMG_6241.jpg
The Tundra is more fun as the TTV6 throws you back in your seat when you make it whistle.

Yeah, Oregon is pretty stingy on non resident tags! This is year 3 east side elk bow went to draw and I didn’t get my normal unit on 2nd choice… stinks! May draw one of the big 3 next year, but have another little one on the way..

To be fair, the recall notice says “engine assembly”, not long block and saw a video on YouTube yesterday from a Toyota mechanic that said he asked a rep and apparently they are replacing turbos also.

    Lots of stuff!
Ya, it should include everything that the oil goes through and touches. That would be the block and heads and turbos and oil pump for starters.

I would hope that any failures, that happen before the recall remedy is launched, would get this same treatment even if they had to get the parts and put them together.

If it was up to me, I would be shipping the complete engine with turbos all put together, then when it gets to the shop, the techs can undo the trans, hoses and plugs, etc.. and remove the old one and stick the new one and hook everything back up. Swap time should be less than the recent bottom end swaps I would think!

I am guessing they will clean and rebuild the swapped out engines and use those for any of the hybrids and other trucks outside the recall window whose engines fail.

I certainly hope that the hybrid trucks get fresh motors as well. I wouldn't be a happy camper if I got an engine with tat description :(

My 2023 Tundra is carrying a May date on the sticker by the front brakes.Hopefully my truck won’t be involved. If it is I will deal with it when and if my engine blows up.

I feel like, if they attempted that, it would bring a lot more liability in Toyota if something wasn’t cleaned properly. More risk over reward. So I’d bet, when those get recalled, it’ll be new engines too.

I do a new car search on carfax with 2023 chosen for the year.

I'm not sure if this link will work from a search of pickup trucks near me that are new 2023s with 4wd.

    https://www.carfax.com/New-Pickups_bt6

Then I go to the dealers site to see if they are listed there.

I think those motors will be destroyed and written off for tax purposes.

That’s the one thing I love about my Tundra, she pulls like a beast.

An absolute monster, especially how I’ve got here set up. I’ve said it a million times in this forum, fair is fair, while I’m extremely disappointed in regards to the bearing failures, she’s an absofuckenlutley beast when I give her the skinny pedal !!

Love/ hate this truck. Still remember when I took her offorading, no other trucks could climb the hill she climbed, I saw a few Duramax and Chevys that would not attempt to the climb the very same hill the ol’ gurl sat on top of.

I think the first thing people considering a Gen3 should do is drive one before they ask any questions. If the power, integration and smoother ride doesn't does not do anything for you, don't go any further. The additional complexity and cost will not be worth it. I had a Gen1 and Gen2. Good and honest trucks at the time that I thought we're miles ahead of the domestics. I drove a 2.5 last weekend and was surprised how I missed the power and 10 speed. It's a fine truck but not interesting to me, I don't care if it goes to the moon and back without changing the oil. I feel the same way about gen3 Tacomas and Forerunners. The great news, is that nobody is forced to buy anything. Like a GMC or F150? have at it.

Just an update on this for a discussion I had with my dealer and Toyota today.
I had a conversation this morning with the general manager at my local dealership. I had had a previous discussion with Toyota directly where I was told the dealership would implement their own process for handling the recall process.
In the discussion with the general manager, they told me they had been on a Zoom video call with Toyota where they were updated on the situation.
The manager informed me that their dealership would be leaving the choice to the owner as to how and when their vehicle was processed - some wanted to wait till it failed, others wanted to wait a couple of years to allow a "longer like" for their Tundra while other's like myself, would want it done as soon as possible as I don't want to be caught with my pants down pulling a 8K lb. trailer in the middle of Wyoming. I was also told that Toyota provided them with a replacement mechanism\process that did not involve the removal of the cab and the complete engine removal and replacement could be done in close to 1 day.
Lastly they would be getting an update on the engine availability at the end of the month

Thx for sharing. Love to see that swap done in fast motion video. Doesn’t seem possible even with lots of help.

Very good news @PGomersall. Thanks for the info.

Just curious, for those engines that have failed in the recent past, what are they getting? A short block or long block? And what is the time duration for this repair?

    Thanks in advance.

They have to be committed at this point to save face . They will make it right , but will lose some faith along the way . I also wish they went with an inline 6 ( Yamaha co-op). Not another BMW transplant but an all new inline 6 . All well , it’s nice to dream lol

It will be a crated long block, from intercooler down to oil pan, including wiring harness.

Someone who works at a dealership can chime in. Isn’t only a master tech allowed to do the job? Last time I talked with someone, there wasn’t many of those in one dealership

Long block usually does not have manifolds, turbos, alternator, A/C compressor, etc, etc. It's a lot of work to transfer those from one engine to another. Unless Toyota comes up with a super efficient way to pull the old engine out in under couple of hours, which I highly doubt.
