I’m sure there is a thread answering my question, but with a newborn, I am kind of pressed for time. Curious if anyone knows or has attempted to tow a car trolley behind a 3rd Gen Tundra?

I have a 2022 SR5 crew max RWD. I am looking to rent a U-Haul car, trolley or the car transporter and tow my wife’s 1977 Mercedes-Benz 450sl from NW Florida to central Mississippi. The Benz weighs in just under 4,000 lbs. I do not have air suspension or any suspension mods at all.

I have towed a Toro Dingo (stand-behind skid steer) semi regularly when I had a landscaping business. That equipment with a trailer was probably about 3,000lbs. The truck did great around town with that load. My concern is the hitch/trailer tongue capacity of the 3rd Gen SR5 with an old steel body vintage Benz.

Any thoughts would be appreciated because I need to transport it next Thursday.

I would consider renting their full auto trailer for such a long trip. It has trailer brakes, which will be less taxing on Tundra brakes.

You don't have to worry about tongue capacity for the trolley. Most of the weight on the trolley goes directly to the axle and wheels since barely any weight "hangs" in front of the towed vehicle wheels.

PS. Just for the "completeness" reminder: you shouldn't tow RWD on the trolley as it might cause transmission damage. Some say reverse towing (rear wheels on a trolley) is an option, but I would only consider it on a short, low speed trip around the town. With reverse towing, most of the load's weight (engine and tranny) is going to be at the rear, making it prone to sway.

^ What @ArcticFox said, with the exception that if you are towing a RWD vehicle on a tow dolly, you can disconnect the rear driveshaft at the differential and you won't need to worry about destroying the transmission (which is a legitimate concern otherwise).

You truck would have no problem with either a tow dolly or a the dual axle car hauler they rent. I've pulled cars on tow dolly's with much lesser vehicles; I prefer a full size trailer, though.

Thanks for the help! Going for it with the dual axle car transporter trailer.

The Tundra should have plenty of power for this, assuming the Benz isn't crazy heavy.

I towed a 1976 Pontiac Bonneville about 400 miles on a car dolly, with a late 90's model Chevy S 10 V6. Pulled that mug up the big hill on I-77 called Fancy Gap.

    KNABORES,

That's an impressive picture! I definitely need to get this Tundra into action.....my GMC Canyon struggled a bit to maintain 55 mph pulling my single axle trailer with zero turn and lawn tractor on it up just a slight hill. :(
