Tundra engine recall - interesting news

I haven't seen it posted yet, so here are the news from

"Toyota Motor North America has decided to replace the engines in more than 100,000 Toyota Tundra full-size pickups and Lexus LX SUVs from the 2022-23 model years that run rough and could potentially lose power because machining debris was not cleared when they were produced. The Japanese automaker said Toyota and Lexus dealers "will replace the engine with a new one at no cost to customers" and that customers would be notified this month about the fix."

Don't kill the messenger, I'm only quoting what Automotive News is saying.

 

That's not new

 

It is new in the sense that Toyota apparently will replace all 100,000 engines, not only the ones with evidence of damage.
Original recall note said that Toyota will inspect the engines first. Now it seems that all trucks under recall will get a new engine. I also saw a video saying that this will be a full engine swap, not short block only.

 

Go get a discounted 22-23 now before they all get replaced and reclaim their values! Truly hoping everyone starts sharing news that their notifications state exactly this remedy and all 3rd gens end up being what everyone expected from Toyota. It certainly goes a long ways towards removing the doubt about what you got/are getting and restoring confidence in the product.

This lines up with a reddit post from yesterday basically saying the same thing. Expensive for Toyota but this would hopefully restore some of the lost trust/confidence from this whole issue.

 

This is the key sentence:
"For all involved vehicles, Toyota and Lexus dealers will replace the engine with a new one at no cost to customers. "

This is quite different from other recalls which typically say "For all affected vehicle ...".
So it looks like everybody is getting a new engine.

 

And this leaves the door open to those not included this time around

 

With it being a safety recall it makes sense. They can't just wait until someone's engine goes to replace it, too big of a risk.

Other than a buyback which would be ideal, that’s the news for current G3 owners have hoped for. Good news!

 

Wow. That is going to hurt a lot. 102,000 engines at $25000+ a piece(the cost ive seen quoted for prior engine replacements) is $2.5 billion.

Well, I think we can safely say they wont redesign the Tundra for 30 years this time since its going to take them that long to recoup the cost of development and replacing 100k motors.

 

Yota can afford the hit and has no choice.

 

Even at Toyota’s cost, I’d imagine it’ll be $20K or so for the new long block, shipping and labor. Kudos to Toyota for what appears to be a solution I think affected 3.4TT owners can live with, not ideal, but good enough.

How involved is an engine swap? Does the truck have to be torn down and ripped to pieces to swap the engine?

 

Toyota Motor Corp make a gross profit of roughly $65 billion a year. I think they'll be able to absorb this cost easily.

That's definitely great news for all 22-23 non-hybrid Toyota and Lexus owners.
Now let's wait and see what they'll do with the Tundra and Sequoia hybrid engines.

 

This is great. This is why we buy Toyota. Now we'll basically have a new truck with the new engine. I'll be keeping mine for a long long time. I'm at 46k now, hopefully it'll last until the new engines are ready

 

thats what I was thinking as well. I thought the "engine assembly" is only part of the engine part name, not a full engine.

if it is a full engine, then thats great and toyota stepped up during a shit happens deal and thats why I say I trust toyota more to fix things when "shit happens", which can happen to anyone or anything really.

lastly, cab off isnt a big deal, they are all designed for that now a days, it makes it easier, not harder
