With the permission of @LOTSOFTOYS, he's agreed to let us have a "ask the Toyota mechanic" thread. For those of you who aren't aware, Jace "Lotsoftoys" is a local, Denver mechanic for Toyota. He is the only mechanic myself, and many, many TW.com guys let touch their trucks.

    No trolling.
    No arguing.
If you ask a legit question - expect a legit answer or follow up question.
Be patient. Like most members here, he has a F/T job, and life outside of the forums.

*Note: He is trained to troubleshoot and fix stock Toyota parts. He isn't going to know the aftermarket items unless he has done them on his personal vehicle. You also need to understand that it is going to be very difficult for him to diagnose your exact problem without seeing your vehicle. He will do the best he can with the words you write. Pics or video may help as well.

My only complaint is, "why did it take so long to make this happen"? :oldglory:

Is it true that my 07 Tundra may actually have Brembo calipers? My 07 calipers are definitely 4 piston. @LOTSOFTOYS
Is that because I have the 07 tow/haul package?

I like legit responses that will actually help members here. No need to to jump in unless there is something to add that may actually help. Hate jump in trolls with only negative responses and do nothing to actually contribute to our Tundra ownership experience. If you want to "jump" in, at least be consistent and try to provide a positive experience for all of us here. (I know "it's the internet") It's like, "what came first, the chicken or the egg?" I have lived too long to argue over that scenario. Be positive.

Tvip module: does this control door lock remotes as well as the security system?

Remotes won't program. Factory or ebay cheapys.
Installed aftermarket remotes with starter kill. Now alarm will go off every so often when I unlock remotely. Disable horn by unlocking manually.

My 07 Tundra sits a lot now that I have a new Tacoma as my daily driver. I noticed that after it has been sitting for a week or so when I turn on the air conditioning there is an initial loud metallic knock sound (coming from the compressor?) and an unusual "drain" on the engine at idle just for a moment. After the initial "knock" it goes away and the AC works fine. If I drive it for a few consecutive days afterwards it isn't an issue. Is this a sign of a failing AC compressor or could it be a sign of something else like a serpentine belt?

Is the noise louder in the cab or in the engine bay?
Coworkers Nisan Titan does that. He said it is the motor that opens the vents or switches between AC and heat. Something jammed in it. Try switching to heat to see if it makes the noise again or just on startup.

Its definitely louder in the engine bay. I have to think it is coming from the compressor like it is seized for a moment and breaks free??? It only does it when I turn on the AC, not heat or just the fan.

On a side note, I see you are in Broomfield. My wife is from Broomfield:)

I'm sure it's the ac clutch just initially grabbing causing the noise. But ac works fine?

I recently did my first oil change on my 2011 5.7 with 33,000 miles. I used full synthetic 0-20W valvoline, about 3 weeks later I began to see 3 or 4 drops of oil on the garage floor and could smell hot oil as if it was getting on the exhaust. At first I thought maybe I screwed up the oil change, but upon further inspection found both valve covers leaking! 1) Should I have used 5W-20W instead of 0W-20W? 2) When they change oil at the dealership what viscosity do they use? 3) Have you seen any other Tundras come in with this problem? I must add that the dealership is changing them out under warranty. Has anyone else on this forum had this problem with their truck? I appreciate your thoughts on this LOToys.

Yes I've seen that before. You are using the correct viscosity.
My question to you though is...
Are u sure it was the valve covers and not the cam towers?

I guess you would call them cam covers as it is overhead cams, I am old school they used to be valve covers. I guess I was surprised that I was having this problem, as none of my Tacos ever leaked a drop of oil with many more miles on them. I appreciate your time LOToy's thank you.

Try to take a couple pictures of the leak(s) and post them here. That may help clarify.

No your right they are called valve cover gaskets. Cam towers are under the valve covers, on top of the cylinder heads

Hey @LOTSOFTOYS hope you can help me out.
I have a '12 Tundra and getting a bunch of maintainer done.
I bought the truck with 40k miles and it currently has 65k miles.
I have never done anything with th tranny. I do quite a bit of towing 2-3k lbs.
Can't find anything on the previous owner doing any tranny maintainer either.
Should I just do a simple drain and fill method using WS fluid?
    Thanks in advance!

Yes you are spot on. Drain and fill it. Flushes arent necessary imo. Are u going to do it your self, I'd recommend having a dealer do it. Gotta use the scan tool....

If u could watch transmission temp I'd say u can do it. Draining and measuring how much comes out isn't a reliable way of doing it.

Probably not. I'm not a big believer of hp gains just because of spark plugs.... let us know how they work out!?
