This is the first trailer I've ever owned. I've always tent camped, camped out of my vehicle in remote areas to hunt, or just rented a cabin at a state park, which is kinda camping, but not really.
With this trailer, I'm parking it at the state park and that will be home base for a week. I'll be visiting my daughter and her new family and they might come up and spend a day at the park/trailer. Not sure, the new baby is pretty new. But the trailer has AC and can keep him away from the bugs. So, not really camping so much this trip, as it's a mini hotel room for a week. And the RV pad is $25 p/day, as opposed to an actual hotel room.
Not sure what kind of camping I'll do down the road with it.
But, I'll own it, so I have options now.
The van was fun as a camper, but I think this will be nicer.

After a few nights you’ll wonder why you didn’t buy one sooner. Tent camping is great, except for the rain and not being able to stand up. Having your own bathroom is heaven.

You're absolutely right. We tent camped for a long time. Rough camping, only accessible with 4WD, middle of nowhere stuff. About our early 40s we bought a pop up. AC and heat and not on the ground. 10 years later we moved on to beach houses or cabins. "Camping" I think is age dependent.

Yeah… 65 and sunny where we are. Heaven.

There is a battle starting in my head about retirement. The area we are at (both of us) is a slice of heaven. Pondering if this weather, scenery and remoteness is worth staying here. Unfortunately I think that would make the wife happy…

Last time we tent camped we were on a 3 week road trip thru CO and UT. Had to skip our time at Arches NP cuz the weather was set to broil. Stopped at a dealer in SLC and bought a trailer. Done.

I don’t work all week to sleep like shit, eat cold sammiches cuz of a burn ban and share a toilet with scum on the weekends.

I think others have answered, but just to set up/install it's a lot...

If that price is hitch and setup/install, then it's about right. These do need to be set up properly by someone who understands them and knows what they are doing. Once it's set up, they should walk you through proper set-up and 'settings' for future use, which really wouldn't change unless you add a considerable amount of payload to the truck over the initial set up or change/upgrade the suspension in some way (in which case you should have someone help you re-establish proper set up).

Congress, in the name of helping us all, screwed up pensions in 1974 with the passage of ERISA. It is now too risky for any employer to provide a defined benefit pension plan. Multiemployer plans are even worse. Many companies have been forced into bankruptcy because of the pension liabilities. 401(k) plans and the like reduce unforeseen liability to the employers. Every city in the US that has filed bankruptcy has pension problems - and many that have not yet filed.

Definitely spend a couple of nights in it and make sure you understand how everything works, where to find fuses, (how to manually open/close slide out if you have one), etc...

Also, if you have dual axles, I'd recommend carrying a second spare... They are generally fairly inexpensive to pick up and if you hit something in the road that causes a flat/blowout, it's likely to take out both tires

    Trailer oven hack incoming...

If you cook or plan to cook in the trailer oven at all (baked goods, turkey breast, etc....) Pick up a small pizza stone that fits in it; those darn ovens don't hold heat well and often cook very unevenly. The pizza stone will keep the oven temp more consistent during the cooking process. You'll burn through a little extra propane to heat the stone, but it's worth it as expensive as food ingredients are these days. When we had ours, we'd always take the trailer up to Zion for Thanksgiving, and the wife would cook a full-size bone-in Turkey breast in ours that would come out pretty darn good.

I'm very fortunate that my pension is independent of most of that... NVPERS is it's own beast, so we don't have any worries about bankruptcies, city or state based decisions, etc... The only true concern is the account/money 'lasting'. Here's our financial statement from last fiscal...

    https://www.nvpers.org/sites/default/files/2024-01/FY23PAFR.pdf

At the time we were sitting at just over 58 billion in the account, which had grown 3.8 billion from the previous year... It's being managed quite well, and the planners basically have only made a few changes here and there to maintain a favored prospectus for future generations

One of the things that will work to the advantage of the account is that these newer generations are staying put as long in their careers. So, payouts and benefit obligations in the future will probably go down even though we are currently in a point where payouts are fairly high (many folks left PD, FD, and other eligible jobs over the last 4-5 years that otherwise may have stayed longer to max out their pensions)...

I know many that aren't this fortunate w/their pensions though, so I definitely understand what you are saying.... Given the choice between a municipal, county, state or even a company providing the pension account, I'd definitely prefer to take my own risks and make my own investments. We see this w/our retiree healthcare; each year we face possible termination of the program and unknown price increases...

Did not know you were part of a state retirement system - the 10th amendment has protected you from the vagaries of Congress.

I'm fortunate to be in a very solid and healthy state pension, retirees do pretty well. We do the "high five" pension plan

Don't get me wrong, they are nice wheels. I like them. I just view them like the tomahawk shifters; cool but not worth the scarcity tax they carry.
