So I stopped by my local dealership for some coolant and decided to stop by my usual service rep for some pricing on a transmission flush. Can I do it myself yes but I get lazy with certain things and would rather pay the dealership to do it instead. Anywho, pervious own only went to Toyota but there is no record of a transmission flush… I’m at 167k and now seriously debating if I even want to flush it. Last time I made a bad decision with my Ranger at 180k. Next thing I know the damn transmission was slipping into failure.
I’d like some recommendations on what I should do, or if anyone has had a similar situation and decided to flush lmk how that went for you!
    Thank you in advance

Do a drain and fill if you’re nervous. If it were my truck I’d do a full fluid exchange.

Drain and fill , I wouldn't flush that transmission. Make sure they change the gasket and the filter.

This. If you live in the rust belt, maybe forgo the gasket and filter as the pan bolts can be somewhat seized and snap off if care is not taken during removal. But for sure a drain and fill. If it’s really never been done before, it wouldn’t hurt to a couple of drain and fills with enough time between them to get the new fluid circulating and cleaning a bit. 1k mikes, 5k miles, 10k miles - whatever works for you. Just get some new fluid circulating.

I had a flush done by the dealer @ 130k miles with no negative effects drain and fills about every 50k miles which is about 1/4 the capacity. To make things simple I also do a diff service at the same time

I disagree with replacing the transmission filter when I have done it it has been clean and by taking the pan off you run the risk of seized bolts even if you don’t live in the rust belt

    Too many, but not enough....
Just do a drain and fill. Flushes are for toilets, not transmissions.

Thanks yall, looks like il have to get under there and do a drain/fill since the dealership only does flushes. Y’all use OEM fluid or aftermarket?

OEM Toyota World Standard (WS) fluid without a doubt. Others may have other opinions, but I’m happy with the OE stuff. So are most reputable transmission builders.

I bought my 07 with 213,000 on it. Had the stealership do a D&F. The service advisor said he would only recommend a D&F and then do it again in 20K. So that's what I did.

There are two types of transmission flushes. The first is a power flush and pretty much guarantees a transmission failure on higher mileage vehicles. The pressure used to flush the transmission often dislodges little bits of crud that jam the passages and valves in the valve body. The other type is a passive flush. A hose it connected to the intake for the fluid and a supply of fresh fluid. The output is connected to a catch can for the old fluid. The vehicle is then started and the pump replaces the old fluid with new. If the dealer, or a good mechanic, offers a power flush, run. If they offer the passive flush, you should be just fine.
