Traded my ‘24 TRD Pro

You don't think that an artificially government subsidized market/program (EVs) will burden an already overtaxed resource (power grid), making a far more expensive commodity(electricity), and ultimately destroying the benefits (lower cost of ownership) of said commodity. At the same time, there would be no increased consumption of a finite resource (fossil fuels) and the creation of the exact opposite effect (cleaner environment) of it's stated original intent?

If only there were examples of this we could see in real time.

Oil and gas companies get tax breaks. No subsidies.

Subsidies are payments, tax breaks, or other forms of economic support given by governments to certain industries or economic sectors.

The tax breaks get covered somewhere. Some tax breaks are for the consumers, some for the producers. No matter, we're all paying for it.

And there's a lot of dumdums that think all subsidies they don't like are inherently bad, but then they're good with other subsidies that they probably aren't even aware of.

All that to say, I ain't the one whining about it.

 

We have been using a BMW i3 (with the little scooter motor generator) since 2018 for our work service call vehicle. Last year My wife got a new VW ID.4. We have a Level 2 charger at the house so it has been good and we haven't had a need to look for a charging station in all this time.

Our Tundra paperweight/planter box is sidelined now and we have requested a loaner or rental from Toyota but not holding our breath. I feel like Toyota is heading away from ICE like most other manufacturers or at least limiting their efforts and r&d.

We have some distances to drive coming up and will use the VW and deal with fast charging stations along the way.

We really like driving our EV's with the instant power and fuel savings are nice too!

 

Sure, do you think that will change anything? I don't. Far too many people read into that story what they wanted to or didn't want to hear.

 

BTW, that PRO isn't part of the recall so it wouldn't be part of the 500 news stories.

 

I'm not defending any government subsidies, but oil and gas subsidies are not designed to prop-up the industry, but to regulate it and offset the costs for consumers at the lower end of the income spectrum. The industry would exist just fine without subsidies.

I was about to buy a ZR2 2500 Chevy also, but after finding this out decided not to. The “Allison” part of the transmission is now only tuning assistance they provided to Chevy. Decided to go with the tundra. I have a diesel ram I love and didn’t want to risk a shitty trans.

 

A good discussion but It happens every time, the EV people get defensive and with out fail say things like, “this is gonna happen” or “that is gonna happen”. It will never be until it actually happens people.
I tow at least an hour to two hours one way and then back on a weekly basis. Go on vacations, towing. I live in a rural area. It’s going to take decades for the tech to do what my ICE does weekly. It’s going to take years if not also decades for the infrastructure to be in place, that is in place for my current ICE vehicle.
There is a place for EV’s, but it will never be at my place. I won’t live long enough to see it happen.

I’m waiting for Toyota’s Tundra recall solution to be a new electric powertrain.

Gorgeous truck, man. If it made sense for my lifestyle I'd get a 3/4 ton gasser (my short commute would make a diesel run like dog doo) and enjoy the hell out of it. Love a full size HD truck when I can justify the use.

What are your plans for it? You tow something frequently?

 

I was just thinking the same thing. Reliability is the question. And over $70k.....pretty soon noone will be able to afford a vehicle payment. A vehicle payment should not be close to a mortgage payment.

 

I have been away from Toyota for a long time. Last toyota was a 73 Celica. We traded our perfectly good Ridgeline for the Tundra. We were looking for a bit more towing capacity and the reliability of the gen 2 and 2.5 was what swayed us to get this truck.

So we are not as convinced that we made a good choice. My wife is very disappointed now and refuses to let it leave the driveway. I have requested a rental car and I really expect that I would hear back, not even an FU don't bug us response.

We are not sure where this will end up or if we even have the Tundra after this is said and done. I will be watching this process very closely and I expect to be even further disappointed. I cant see Toyota swapping out the engines and a short block swap would be a joke. It would be hard to expect a reliable swap done by the lot boy who is taking time off washing the Corollas to swap out a block.

Such an unfortunate choice and to think what we could of bought a 2021 1794 before.

If we look at the roll out of the fuel line repair, how would they be able to make this engine issue go away? They cant even get the gas gauge to work!

Maybe we just need to blame COVID and carry on!

 

So you got rid of the pro because you freaked out over debris on a second oil change. Sounds like you wanted a way out. Especially with not even 5K miles. I would of given it at least 10K before deciding and even then done a uoa to see what’s going on…but that’s just me.

 

Freaked out? No, I proactively looked to trade due to large amounts of debris and one chunk in particular. And yes, of course I wanted a way out. The 3rd gen has been a disaster with horrific build quality. That, and an inevitable safety recall for all ‘24 Tundras made it an easy choice to get rid of the ticking time bomb while I could. Glad you would have been willing to wait until 10k. I didn’t want to continue rolling the dice and be stranded with ensuing Midas techs at the Toyota dealership tearing my truck apart and replacing with defective short blocks….but that’s just me.

 

If the R1T had a 6-ft bed I'd likely trade into one in the next 2-3 years. Alas, the Tacoma and Frontier are the only midsize offering with a 6-ft bed. To add insult to injury Toyota does not even offer a hybrid long bed.

 

I get it. As of now the 24’s aren’t affected…yet.

Same here. I just bought a 24 Civic but looked real hard at a hybrid. EVs weren't even on the list because of the range I desire. The hybrid purchase price, insurance and registration all cost more. Most of my driving is hit the highway and go so it would take much longer to see enough fuel savings to offset the cost.

We have two Honda TRX300FW four wheelers that would be perfect if they were electric. I seldom go more that 2 miles from home on them.

 

On this forum. There could be more we don’t know about.

 

Of course, they've sold 80Kish 2024's. But I mean 1? This on a forum where a volume knob breaking illicit cries for a class action lawsuit.
