2024 failures have been reported in this forum, and many are being reported with pictures of the trucks torn apart on multiple Facebook Tundra forums to mention a few. To your point, and as many have speculated, including myself, Toyota is deceiving customers and continues to lure people into buying the '24's. Toyota has no clue what the problem is which is why some customers have had multiple short block replacement failures. Toyota keeps sending defective short blocks as band-aids in the hopes it buys them time and temporarily satisfies the warranty claim. This all makes sense as the grandson Mr. Toyoda himself has publicly apologized for lying recently. Toyota is a mess and is continuing to spiral downhill now with the recent recall of Tacoma's and Grand Highlanders.

Bearing material is being blamed by some experts. Oil corroding the bearings…

    Incorrect.

Bearings No 1 and 4 have been redesigned, and that will take care of the potential issue.

How do you know if your motor was built after the redesign?

Actually, I do not know that. I am hoping it has the new bearings, but all I have is that hope.

What are they changing about the Sierra for 2026+?

    I don't know, but I believe 2026 is the re-fresh cycle for the Silverado/Sierra? 2020, 2023, 2026?

I'm hoping they'll offer a 35+ gallon gas tank on their 1500 platform. 24 gallons is useless for towing.

More evidence that the 2018 is, in fact, the best year.

Doubt that. I agree, the small tanks GM uses are ridiculous, but what makes you think they will put in a nice big tank?

If I had to buy a truck TODAY...

It wouldn't be a Tundra. The extent of the potential engine problems is still unknown, and I just wouldn't be willing to take that risk. If I had the flexibility to wait until Toyota has demonstrated that the Gen 3 engine problems have been remedied, I would consider a Tundra.

It wouldn't be a Ford. I owned a 2022 F-150 that was a thorn in my side for 14 months until I could get rid of it. It had a drivetrain shudder that Ford considered normal for a modern F-150 along with a seemingly endless assortment of other issues that continued to appear from the first day I owned it until the day it was gone. The list is too long to even mention here. My dealer determined that the transmission was faulty, but Ford wouldn't allow them to replace it under warranty. I will never own another Ford simply based on Ford's response to the problems this truck had.

It wouldn't be a RAM. I've just never cared for RAM, probably because of experience with Dodge trucks I have driven in years past.

Today, it would probably be a GMC with the 3.0 Duramax. I don't want any of the GM V-8 engines with the cylinder deactivation system. The baby Duramax comes with all the added complexity of DEF injection and fuel additives to combat the poor diesel fuel in the US, as well as the potential issues with the DPF down the road, but it seems to be a solid engine. Unfortunately, the GM trucks also use a 10-speed transmission that was co-developed with Ford. I spoke with one owner of a new GM truck who said his transmission had a "shudder".

Having said all that, I own a 24 Tundra and I really, really like it. It runs great, drives great, and I have no intention of trading it anytime soon.

One thing the recent engine failures have revealed to me is the stunning cost for a replacement engine in the Tundra. I have to admit, I was surprised by the ~$30K cost.

That's just not acceptable when domestic manufacturers are $5-10k for a replacement engine + turbos.

The 5.7 was absurdly expensive to replace as well. One wonders why it’s so much more expensive?

In Oct 2013, Got to see an overflow lot for Carlsbad Toyota dealership, must of had close to a hundred of the refreshed 14 Tundra's. I'm sure that must indicate something negative lmao $$

If my truck got totaled tomorrow, I'd be looking at a gas one ton, either GM or Ford. A half ton just doesn't have the payload for my needs any more.

That being said, if I had to get another half ton, it would be a 2016-2018 Tundra.

For a gas HD, I would go with a Ford 7.3L Godzilla. The 6.6 L8T is a slouch. Also, Transfer Flow makes a 50+ gallon replacement gas tank for the Super Duty for longer distance requirements:

Haven't heard any complaints from the guys on here with the 6.6 yet, though I'd be sure to go 2024+ with the 10 speed.

Dad and cousin both have Chevy 3.0 dmax’s. No issues with either so far with about 80k miles between the two. The fuel mileage they get with them is insane. Pops uses his all the time to pull his Hewes to mtn lakes.

I had a 2024 Chevy Custom Trail Boss with the 3.0 in it before I sold it and bought a 24' Tundra. The 3.0 is an awesome little motor with great mileage but I had nothing but issues in the first 5,000 miles. Mainly electrical and transmission issues. Know a few people with newer GM products, and all have had issues. Also, living in a cold climate, I had DEF heater issues when it would get really cold and it screwed me on a road trip last winter. Looking back, I should've just kept my 2020 Tundra, but the new Tundra is much nicer and more comfortable to drive for our long road trips in my opinion.

We also owned a 2020 F-150 with the coyote for a short time. The pinion bearing went out at 20k miles and smoked the rear end along with more recalls than I could count. I think I just have bad luck with trucks..Anymore, all of the new stuff is junk compared to what they used to be. Just have to choose between dog shit or horse shit..

I'd look for a low mileage 2.5 gen 2019+ Limited or Platinum trim. Reason is they are very reliable, have all the features most need and will last for years.

In 1988 I had purchased a Chevy Scottsdale, it had a 38 gallon tank. A larger tank would be nice, Well until I had to fill it of course LOL.

While the good old days weren't always that good I have had thoughts at times about a classic 50's through 70's truck that's been restored. Cast iron blocks. Straight forward engines, simple design. I.e. truck idle a little slow, open the hood and adjust the throttle screw. Vent not working trace down the cable from the dash control to the vent. Window not working . take the screws out of the door side panel and look. Battery low and not enough power to crank, get it rolling and pop the clutch. All mechanical. If restored properly it would cost, but compared to today's prices of vehicles it's a toss up. Added bonus is it's a classic and therefore always in style in it's own way. Use it, take care of it and in a few years if you decide to sell it you should be able to get your money back.
As said the good old days weren't always that good. But! They weren't always that bad either.
