Lol lotta 6” drop bracket lifts with goofy looking tires

Most surprising part is that a ton of them are 4wd. I guess off-roading is lanai

Who wants to ship their truck over and give it a whirl?

alright, so quick update to #2 of dittothat’s build thread

I installed my new-to-me sensors and a sensor extension cord i had to build with some corsa parts (major PITA stuffing 22awg wire in microscopic holes). This exercise was the definition of pushing rope.. not sure how some people enjoy building those connector things . Anyway, so I turned the truck on and am greeted with the BSM see dealer message. Odd thing is that the BSM switch no longer illuminates and to let me turn the BSM on/off. I messed up the BSM once before but cant remember if the switch went out that time as well. So, at this point I am still not sure if the new BSMs are compatible with 2.5gen v.1's yet. When I had the BSMs unplugged there was no error message on the dash, so at least the ECU is receiving some message.

Either way, I signed up for techstream (research only for now) so I can download all the specs for the BSM and take a look at the angles. I made the mistake of following CBI's video when setting the depths for the sensor and looking at it now... they're way off. I ran into the garage and looked at the original sensors and they're are nearly perpendicular to the ground. The way CBI has it set (<1" top, <.75 bottoms) leaves you at probably like 10* facing down. I'll have to bring out my angle finder tomorrow to get the exact number.

I'll be following this thread for guidance.
    https://www.4runners.com/threads/success-with-diy-bsm-calibration-and-aftermarket-rear-bumper.31360/

I don't believe I can get parameters and calibrate the BSMs with the full version of techsteam (maybe someone can answer that for me? Would be great if I could). If not, I'll be looking around to see if I can find a loaner higher end scan tool or maybe a cheap one off CL.

If I start getting traction on this and it seems like it might work, then I may look into something like this to really get the angles dialed in correctly.
    https://www.homedepot.com/p/Klein-T...ross-Line-and-Red-Plumb-Spot-93LCLG/313271035

Hope to have another follow-up post on this in a week. Once I am able to read the DTC it should be pretty telling if its just a calibration issue or if the sensors are a no-go.

I’ve got some bookmarks saved that I think have all the info you’re looking for without paying the subscription. I need to check on my computer though. I’ve meant to calibrate mine but they have worked fine for my needs using the numbers I set them to (similar but not exactly the same as the CBI video).

I’ve got a suspicion the 18+ sensors send different CANBUS signals than the older ones. From following @Jeff_5_7 ’s work on getting an 18+ instrument cluster into a 14-17 truck, there’s significant differences in the communication going on even if the fundamental wiring and connections look same/similar…

Yeah, I’m starting to think that as well. Doesn’t make sense that the switch isn’t lighting up. There’s a lot of differentiation in the wiring downstream of the BSM sensors that I was hoping would resolve itself at the ecu (speed sensors etc). I’ll tinker with it and pull the codes to see what it’s looking like

Alright, we're starting to get a little crazy here. Making some progress (thanks to the FCC) and things are going to get tough. So, I was able to confirm that all srr3a's are the same. You dont need to buy the toyota specific model number if you're planning to add BSMs to a 2021 trd pro or something like that. Looking at the internal photos of the chipset of the two sensors (plus the EWD of the different tundras) doesn't give me much hope that I'll be able to get the new sensors to work with the old canbus system. There are two different boards in each one of these sensors. One for the RF and one for something else. For a moment I got excited that I would be able to remotely mount the old BSM sensor, then use the RF portion of the new sensor, and finally connect them with an elongated custom ribbon cable thatd run out of the new BSM mounted on the bumper to the old BSM remotely mounted. Unfortunately the new BSM has a 15 pin ribbon cable and the old is 20 pin.

    and

    https://fcc.report/FCC-ID/OAYSRR3A/

BUT I still have one left in the chamber!
While doing all this researching, I figured out the guy who designed and engineered these sensors and tracked him down on linkedin. Planning on sending him a message tonight in hopes that I get an answer

Not sure how the introductory line should go "Hey, I'm a member over on Tundras.com (not sure, but you've probably heard of us) and I'm looking to do a tiny little modification to a part you engineered."

Also, and this is kinda contradicting what I said above, I'm pretty sure that with enough trial/error this probably could be done. Found out they used to sell these sensors on Aliexpress for $40. They also sold it with a power suppy and canbus adapter so I'm pretty sure its possible but you might need to design the system from the ground up

I was polite, thanked him for his time and wished him a great week ahead

Butttt, if I can’t figure it out by September might have to fly over there for Oktoberfest and talk can-bus protocol over some beers

Small world tho.. was talking to my neighbor earlier today and mentioned I got a response. Completely forgot he worked in the engineering dept as a PM for a startup autonomous trucking company. He asked who I reached out to and when I told him he said “oh yeah, I’ve never spoken to him before but definitely seen/heard the name”

Parents always told me “it’s not what you know; it’s who you know”. And you gotta have those tidbits of info just in case. Sometimes it pays to gossip! :gossip:

Have been fortunate enough to knock out a few projects even with the injury.
First I swapped out my fog lights for some BDs
    IMG_8619.jpg
I also redid the under hood wiring to make the battery more accessible. Wires going into the switchpro are now either connected by spade terminals or the sp connector. 1/4 turn counterclockwise on the bus bar gets the majority of those wires out of the way. Ground wires are all along the body instead of on top of the platform above the fuses. Had to relocate the winch solenoid over by the windshield washer tank. Solenoid is now on Anderson connectors so just: unclip and remove 3 bolts to have unobstructed access to that area. I know it may not look like much but this is quite a large improvement of the situation I was dealing with before.
    IMG_8605.jpg IMG_8568.jpg IMG_8569.jpg IMG_8567.jpg

And finally today my wife took the kids to happy hour. I originally was just going to finish wiring up the lights in my bumper but decided to push my luck and see if I could finish my retrofit of 2014-2016 BSMs into the CBI bumper. As seen earlier on this thread, the BSMs for 2018+ aren’t backwards compatible with older trucks, unfortunately. So this is what I came up with. A lot of hacking, filing and rivnutting. The was a rush job that was cobbled together with different bolts, rivnuts, broken bits and snapped mandrels. Wife called just as I was finished so threw all the tools and supplies in a 5gal bucket. Hopped in the truck and flipped the BSMs switch on the dash and no error code. Haven’t taken it for a spin but we’ll see if they’re fully functional tomorrow morning

Both! Kids get their hyped up with sodas and moms get their wine & whine on

They’ve been asking the dads to do the same but we don’t trust ourselves. Certainly would qualify as a hard hat area

Honestly, still kinda mixed feelings on this one. First one I put on had a little play in it vertically when shifting (assume it was loose threads within the shifter which I believe is plastic) and made a *ting* sound through every shift. Pretty sure it was the aluminum hitting the rod on the shifter. That one lasted a day before it got sent down the road to a member and put this one on. Leather is a little worse for wear but body in better condition. One thing I will say about these shifters, is you know when you’re shifting. Your hand feels like it goes wayyy out to the right and then back to the left. I’m sure I’ll grow to love it. Just another relationship I’ll have to grow and nurture

Hahah I try! Sometimes its tough to make sense this build thread. I'll start writing something and then my ADD (self diagnosed :D) will kick in and take me completely off track. That and my fat finger typing often makes it more difficult than the SAT reading comp section.
Do-dads galore  Too many actually, stripping the non-essentials... slowly.
Also, ticking this BSM project off the list takes it down to 17 open items. Getting there!

Check the build link in my signature.
Leather is relatively easy to fix on those.
At this point, I’ve got nearly 15 years and 380k miles with my hand resting comfortably on that handle. Everything else just ain’t right
