What I really want to do is replace the entire JBL system in my 1794. It’s a terrible sound system, amplifier, speakers, … worst audio system I’ve ever had in a car. Set my sights on a Kenwood excelon but I cannot justify the cost in the medium term given my wife isn’t working and we have huge projects to finish on the house. Just can’t.

But at minimum I need CarPlay. The audio upgrades can wait until later.

I have read mixed reports of success/problems from replacing a 2.5 gen head unit with a 3rd gen head unit.

If I can get my hands on, say, a 2021 head unit with CarPlay, my understanding is I can use that provided I buy a new wiring harness from somewhere since the 2021s have a different harness.

    Is that accurate?

Also, I’ll be able to use my existing GPS and XM antennas, right?

And, I’ll retain total functionality with steering wheel and voice controls?

Lastly, 2021s are wired only right? No wireless CarPlay? Where does the phone get wired to? Where is the socket?

When I inquired about changing out my head unit a couple of years ago I found out that 2019 - 2021 are not the same.
They are more digital. My 2018 for example has analog knobs (mechanical) for climate control.
This means the digital controls for climate control may not work.
You will probably have issues with the steering wheel controls too.
Not saying it is not possible but it is not plug and play. The dealer will be able to tell you more.
I think you will have better luck with a 3rd party unit.
Interested to know how you make out.
