is it reading the sign? I thought those were based on GPS/map data.

    I'm not sure.
I know in my work vehicle I'll be on a 75 MPH highway and it will read lower speed limit signs from service roads.
As well it reads 15 MPH speed limit signs on our yard that I'd guess are not in any GPS system..

    EDIT:
I looked it up, it is a camera based thing..
    I learned something today..

I think its mostly likely misplacing you momentarily. I know my phone tells me the speed limit while I'm navigating, and there's no way its reading speed limit signs. I'm fairly certain its just using mapping data and GPS, which admittedly can be wrong.

It's the same camera that reads lanes. It literally reads the signs and does not use GPS for this.

so to answer your question, no I doubt this information will get you out of a ticket, or put liability on anyone else. but that is quite the discrepancy in the data.

    Your phone uses GPS.
Vehicles with cameras, as described above, use them for sign detection.

I just did a quick googlin' and apparently most cars use some combination of the sensor cameras, and GPS data... interesting, TIL.

So I notice when I pass a speed limit sign it shows up. Never before. So it may use both but I don't have the GPS enabled on mine at all. Possibly if you're navigating somewhere using the built in GPS it'll update based on that.
The RAV4 we have does similar behavior where it only updates after you pass a speed limit sign.

Now interestingly it also updates temp signs. (Construction, etc.) So I do believe it's mostly the camera.

Either way homeboy ain't getting out of that ticket. For the same reason you wouldn't get out of it if your speedo was wrong due to different tire sizes.

Way! Rural roads in Ohio that aren't posted are in fact 55 MPH.

It reads the signs. Stop signs / yield signs pop up as well. Turn on the feature and check it out. Pretty sure this one was a digital sign and it whiffed on it as it was a 65 sign.

    Nitrogen filled tires!
most people here ignore the speed limit. They don't care and the fine is not a deterrent. Heck most don't even have a registration or insurance. So to them speed limits is the absolute slowest speed!

If you pay attention to it, it becomes clear it's reading signs. Popping up "stop" signs when it sees a "stop for pedestrians" sign with a small stop sign logo. Sometimes I'll be driving and look down and it'll tell me the speed limit is 25 mph when it's definitely 55 mph. That one always freaks me out as I'm pretty situationally aware when it comes to speed limit signs.

it sounds like it uses the cameras and reading signs when they are available, and likely prioritizing that information. Can anyone speak to if the info pops in areas where there is no speed limit signage? I know many residential areas don't have speed limits posted (my neighborhood doesn't have them, its just known to be 25 mph).

I am sure there will be a boilerplate disclaimer in the description of the operation of this feature in there somewhere already.

I mean it doesn't actually do anything and it can be turned off. It's not like it screams at you or flashes red and blue lights in your eyes.

Also not the worst thing to have a sanity check available, especially in rural areas where speed traps are common.

I've noticed in my area when the sign says "Minimum Speed 40" it changed the display in the DIC to 40 MPH, even though the speed limit is actually 70! Poor execution by the camera/software.

Bullshit. Cover it up and drive down the same road and the same speed will show on the dash. Use Apple car play with your phone in the console and it will tell you the speed limit.

this is one way to tell it’s using the camera.

I wondered myself but like brtnstrns said, if you pay attention it becomes clear.

cool feature if you ask me. Not perfect, but really slick.

Mine loves telling me the speed limit is 75 right as I approach the local military base gate. I don't think gate security would appreciate that speed.

My work vehicle doesn't have GPS, it's the lane camera reading speed limit signs.
I'd try covering the camera, but I would get fired for doing that..

Well, I might be gettin' old and crotchety, but my awareness and reaction time is still keen. I've lived most of my life in cities, so know how to drive in heavy traffic, both high speed and low speed city traffic. Thankfully, I now live in a rural area. 95% of my driving is in rural areas, at highway speeds, but still do my fair share of driving in city chaos. I still do a lot of traveling on the nation's highways, and have an Escort Max360C for the radar traps. And all those other gizmos like BSM, adaptive cruise control, auto braking, accident avoidance, etc, that always set off my old Escort Passport 8500X don't bother this new one a bit. I would just as soon not have to turn any unnecessary crap off when I strap in. I don't have any blind spots, don't need help staying in my own lane, don't need and thankfully don't have that other ^#&(%! brain-dead driving stuff.

But I'm glad y'all have it.

Im always using google auto which is using google maps. I live just about 5 miles outside of a city of over a million people but its mixed rural and suburbs. Its amazing how inaccurate googles spead limits are. Country roads is my state are an automatic 50 mph unless posted so your on a slim 2 lane road which Google is telling you its 25 mph out in the middle of nowhere. Then of course, you get stuck behind someone driving 35.
