Has anyone performed a fluid check? I get a NASTY shift into reverse when I back out of my driveway, first thing in the morning....sometimes when leaving work too after its cooled off for 9hrs. After it warms up its fine but I'm wondering if the fluid is a bit low from the factory.

I read over the replacement procedure but it doesn't specify a fluid level check. @ryanwgregg Do you happen to have the pdf's for #6 and 7 referenced in pg 5 of this doc?

Do you let the car roll forward/backward in park? Sometimes when you load up the parking pawl, it shifts real rough. I like to put it in neutral, engage the parking brake, and shift to park. Seems ridiculous but really smooths out the shifts into gear.

I usually let the parking brake engage before taking my foot off the brake pedal so it keeps the transmission in a neutral position. It does this on level ground (At work) just the same as on my sloped driveway, which leads me to believe its not an issue with the transmission binding up the parking pawl.

I do also do this in the 2.5 gen, on the 3rd gen, OP may be able to just hold foot on brake until auto parking brake fully engages then release foot off brake.

I wish it was that. It shifts out of P just fine but then there's a delay and then a harsh shift into gear (D or R).

Oh yeah, you should ask the dealer to check your oil level. I remember the first year of the 3rd gen Tacoma had transmissions that were not fully filled from the factory.

It’s really hard to check the oil level. You need to get the transmission up to temp and then add new oil via the drain plug until the oil runs out. I wouldn’t want to do this procedure.

    On pg 5 of doc there’s a #3 before #6 and 7 that’s what I have a question about.

    https://www.tundras.com/threads/hard-shift-from-r-to-d.116853/

Some people talked about your hard shifting issue from reverse to drive. I personally have this issue on my Tundra. I was able to replicate the issue with the dealership. They are checking the trans fluid level to see if that is the culprit. Will post here when I find out what they say. Trucks in the shop as of now.

The lurch happens after a slight hesitation into gear from reverse to drive.

If you are under warranty and the issue can be replicated I'd take it to the Dealer and show them the problem first hand - they should be able to check the fluid level and or correct the problem. IMO.

It’s very easy. Did my 3rd Gen Tacoma a few times.

Very easy once you get over the anxiety. I've done complete flush and fill on several Gen3 Tacomas along with adding secondary transmission coolers (pre '19). Simple Process once you understand it.

OP (or anyone), where does one obtain information linked in the original post? Is it what you would find if you subscribe to Toyota TIS? Is it all data? Mitchell?

Update from the technician. They checked the fluid levels and it’s fine. They checked two other tundras on the lot and they had even worse lurch on start up. The technician said by 10,000 miles it should “break in” but he will keep the task case open for me till then just in case.

None of the tsb/recall updates apply to my truck.

I should hit 10k in a few months (at 4k now) so hopefully it does “break in” by then. Someone on the other thread said their issue got resolved after 5k miles of driving.
