    Hey All,

Long time lurker, first time poster. Looking for some opinions on if these wheels look safe to you.

Background info: ordered the wheels and tires online. They shipped them with the wrong lugs. I had Tuffy do the install and they didn’t catch that the lugs were wrong. Had a ton of wobble that I thought was an out of balance wheel. After reading some suggestions here, took it to discount tire to get road force balanced. They did the balance and it helped some, but not all the way.

It started to get worse, so I scheduled an appointment with my local Toyota dealership (should’ve gone to them first…) and they found the issue. The lugs were wrong, so the wheels were moving around on my studs, which caused the damage seen below.

I contacted the online wheel and tire company, they sent me the correct lugs, but the damage has been done. My main concern is safety. Will it be safe to continue using these wheels? Should I demand that they replace them?

    Thanks in advance!

I would not run them. The lug holes are elongated. You could have issues with them staying tight or having the wobble. I had that happen once with a set of wheels and once "fixed" they would never fully hold torque. Lugs would back off over time/speed. I replaced the wheels.

As @frichco228 said, the holes are elongated. I would not run them either. They were under quite a bit of force to elongate them like that. If I read correctly, the online store sent the wrong lug nuts, Tuffy installed them and didn't catch it, and then Discount balanced them and they didn't catch it either? I would see if the retailer will swap them out. If not, you may have to call Icon. What retailer did you order them from? What brand and type were the lugs? The reason I ask is because alot of times when you order something, especially wheels, they ship directly from the manufacturer.

@memario1214 am I close on this one? Is it possible that the retailer possibly had lug nuts in stock but the wheels shipped from Icon?

yea, I wouldn't put my kid in that truck with those wheels. as mentioned, the elongated lug holes won't properly hold the lug nuts anymore, and may worsen over time. I'd be trying to get Tuffy and/or the retailer to compensate for a new wheel somehow.

    I appreciate all the feedback!

Yeah - it vibrated pretty wildly after the install. Custom Offsets sent hex nut extended thread lugs, Tuffy just air gunned the crap out of them, and Discount Tire balanced and reinstalled the wheels with those lugs. I contacted Custom Offsets again expressing my concern and they agreed to send out new wheels. They didn't have the exact ones in stock, so I went with the Icon Compression in Bronze. They're also reimbursing me for the cost of taking my tires off the bad wheels and installing the good.

I'm not sure what brand lugs they use, they send them out in a clear plastic bag with the lug key and that's it.

I took my truck to Mavis Tire and they were able to get them mounted, balanced, and installed like they should've been originally. There's absolutely no wobble at all now.

Thank you all again for the advise and for the confirmation that they were dangerous.

Looks like the OP has it addressed now, but I can put another hand in the air for not having any interest in those wheels with the ring being chewed up and the lug holes being elongated.

It's quite common for wheels and tires to come from different places. Most manufacturers have offerings and it certainly makes things easier to go with their offerings. That said, I am sure that somewhere like Custom Offsets has their own brand of in-house lug nuts that they prefer to use thanks to margins. That's all speculation though on my part tbh.

Sound about right to me. You can go to a local shop to get a name branded wheels but when you look in an install bay it's just bins and bins of lug nuts.
