I did a painfully foolish thing today trying to buff out a scratch.

While loading the truck for a grad party, I tipped a long pallet up onto my bedcover, only to realize moments later that something on the pallet scratched the 'spoiler' area of my tailgate.

I knew it was deep enough to probably require some touch up, so the next day I decided to buff out what I could, and then use touch up on the small scratch that was left.

I managed to go through the clear. When my buffing pad started turning black, I knew I had done the poodle.

I wiped it down, applied an acrylic sealer, buffed, then applied wax.

Truck is MGM, and the light spot is noticeable. Is there anything I can do? IMG_0665.jpg

Dang it! I imagine you’re going to have to get a body shop to fix that one.

Couldn't you just rebuff to get all the sealer and wax off, then tape off around it. Use Duplicolor scratch filler primer and Duplicolor mgm paint then a 2k clear coat. Would require blending the taped off areas after tape is removed. If that doesn't work then you could call the body shop. I'd try this first to see if I can pull it off before I went down the body shop rabbit hole. But I'm a cheap ass.

My recent experience with duplicolor and MGM color is it wouldn't match. I replaced spoiler on Sequoia. The filler primer, MGM spray, and clear spray is not perfect match but from 10 feet away the body lines hide it for my spoiler. Spot on my door, you can see color is a few shades off easily.

I think body shop is need to get perfect match on this tailgate spot.

This is good to know. I've heard wonders about Duplicolor, but have no real first hand experience.

You could polish it back down, and try some touch up paint (would use very little so it doesn’t blotch) and let it dry again before trying to polish to match the color. The best option is to take it to a body shop.

I’ve repeatedly heard that MGM is a bitch to match for some reason.

Thanks for all the thoughts, it confirms what I thought.

I know the metallic makes it impossible to blend, so I imagine worst case is they sand the whole gate and reshoot color and clear. Best case is they sand and then just re-clear.

If they get it somewhat close, it should (over time) match a little more with a lot of sunlight
