So my 2008 Sequoia blew a sleeve in the 8th cylinder.

My beloved sequoia is dead, I said I’d drive her to the ground and in the ground she went.

for reference.. it’s a 2008 pearl white Sequoia Platinum.

I’ve been looking at 2015 sequoia platinums so I can swap my aftermarket parts. Lift, exhaust, uca, intake, etc.

I was wondering if my 2008 Bertha would be worth it to part out.

    ——-

She broke down on the road on the way to work. I gave her a week and 3k worth of parts trying to diagnose her before eventually going to the dealership to figure out.

New spark plugs, fuel injectors, fuel pump assembly, ignition coils.

That did not help. So a newer sequoia is in the mix, I freaking love this truck. Couldn’t even think of driving another vehicle.

Now another thing is, I’d like to hear what people say about bringing spare parts on overlanding trips just in case and what those parts would be, seeing if I can’t pull some from my spare parts truck.

    ———

Last thing, anyone know where I can find the cheapest wheel/rim combo? I plan on using my 2008 wheel and tire set on the 2015. But then save the oem wheels for the future need ( spare tire on bumper carrier one day…)

Would love to hear more about "blew a sleeve" and what exactly caused that and what it means. This is a 5.7?

    Yes, a 5.7 engine

to be fair, I know not much about engines. The advisor said it was the cylinder sleeve that dislodged and got damaged in the engine. I requested a photo and they sent me one (see attached) and I have no idea what I’m looking at.

But I just changed the fuel pump, they said they’d want to drop it, drain and change gas and I know for sure the gas was good and fresh when I changed it. Buddie filled up at the same time I did with no problems.

I was looking for engine rebuilders near me with no prevail as well. They wanted 12k to replace it with a crate engine. 4K was labor.

A description of the symptoms you had would be nice. This isn’t adding up for me. A cracked sleeve I’ve seen - can’t say I’ve heard of one coming loose and from a mechanical perspective I don’t see how that could possibly happen without damage to the cylinder / block.

Sooo I was driving and the engine died. I was able to crank it back up and keep my gas pedal down a bit so it wouldn’t stall, drove it 1-4 mile to my friends place and parked it in the lot.

Upon reading the codes, misfire 7&8 , multiple misfires. P0300 and certain singular cylinder misfires. Changed through the attempted repair process.

would crank it, would hold for a bit, then rev up and then die again. Blue smoke from exhaust.

not sure what other symptoms your looking for but again, I know hardly anything about engines except the basic maintence parts.

If a sleeve was loose, it would sound like like an anvil in a washing machine imo beating itself to death.

When I changed the plugs out there was oil in 6 ,8 and 3 cylinders. Put brand new ones in.

I wish I knew more info from the dealership but that’s all that was relayed to me.

    I’d consider a second opinion - a place that doesn’t sell cars.

I might just have to do that.

I’m still going forward buying a new to me 2015 and swapping parts. After I have that finished I’ll tow it to proper shop and have them take a look. Maybe fix it so I can sell my 2008

Curious if you ever figured out your 2008? Almost sounds like you had a head gasket go or something....not internal metal issues.

I have not, it's sitting in my driveway until I swap out the last parts. Hopefully tomorrow will have my solid offroad motormounts and corsa exhaust changed.

Then I will be able to either sell or repair the old bertha.

I love hearing it might be a head gasket... I should be capable of changing that out myself. I'd love for her to run again.

It turns over but doesn't stay on. Oil in the spark plug tube so head gasket or gaskets for that matter seem like what I was thinking at one point.

    -----

Can't seem to find any guidance on replacing gaskets on it though.
