It is both. When pressure propagates, a normal leak through the bearings located early in the flow reduces the speed of propagation wave. Higher viscosity oil will leak less through the bearings and there's more pressure down the oil channels. It's not a linear process that has many variables, but the consensus is higher viscosity oil reduces the cold start wear.

In cold climate you can use 0w20 in winter and switch to higher viscosity oil for summer. Another consensus is to change oil at least every 6 months, so do one in spring and another in fall.

Without data for either view, it's personal preference. Concensus is not data. I prefer to have flow rather than hoping the oil film is still there to protect. Go with what works for you and I'll go my way.

Another option is to install a accumulator to pressurize the system before crankng. But no one would tolerate waiting 5 second before starting.

This question came to mind reading this thread… no issue going back and forth?

Data won't tell you anything, unless your masters is in fluid dynamics.

Differentials and transfer case withstand immense torque (engine torque multiplied many times) without pressure at all. All they have is oil film. Often splash lubricated.

I decided long ago that saving 0.2 MPG is not worth it for reducing oil film thickness by 20-30%.

Nope. My Tundra runs on a mix of like 3 oils now: I forgot to order oil, drained it and only then found out I have no oil I intended to use. Will change it before going to my long summer trip.

I think I know what you want to ask, but please go ahead and finish your question, so I'll be able to answer.

I have seen a couple of his videos. He definitely does it the scientific way since that is his field of study. But on the flip side, science is science. And so, science is always tentative and subject to revision should new evidence come to light. There is no science that shows if a early oil change has any affect on engine longevity. Just like no oil manuf will ever do a long term side by side oil comparison, example Amsoil vs Mobil 1. Why, because for one they know that at the end of the day the wear will be so minimal, no one would buy the more expensive oil if it not a huge difference.

Why can't it be? I am sure there is a margin of which the oil has to be at. Just like if you go down the rabbit hole of what a true synthetic oil is, you will be amazed at what oil manuf call a full synthetic. Group 3, 4 & 5 are not equal, so start by that.

My first oil change was 1k miles at the dealer. Paid out of pocket.

Is the RL 0W-20 ILSAC GF6A approved? The owners manual calls for ILSAC GF6A. Reviewing the toyota oil document, it's from 2018 and does not state ILSAC GF6A approved either.

I have read where oils are approved for xyz, but the manuf didn't pay for the approval. And then there's the, if its approved for 1 step down from the one needed, is the engine really going to blow up.

likely not. The point is, if you are going to post documents to make a point, might want to read them first. The redline looks appealing, would like to understand if there is a technical reason it's not ILSAC GF6A.

You're talking about what VTL posted then. He was proving to the other member that not all oils of the same viscosity are the same viscosity. As for the cert., maybe they didn't pay for it. Have to ask them guess.

I've been using it for a decade or so, including prev. gen Tundra, which calls for 0w20 as well. Nothing bad, besides it's a bit expensive, hard to get (in less common viscosity), plus I hate those narrow neck bottles.
