hello, i have a 2016 tundra sr5 off road with non jbl audio system. the head unit finally gave up. a friend of mine sold me his head unit which was a jbl head unit from a 2019 tundra platinum.
i installed the head unit and everything works. only things that does not work is being able to adjust the volume. i can not increase or decrease volume. has anyone done this on their tundra and was able to fix it?. dont really want to pay someone to diag it but also dont want to upgrade at the moment. any help please!!!!

    thank you.

    Welcome from NY.

I believe your problem is the amp. The non JBL uses a different amp. You can use the search bar for more/better answers.
I would either get another non JBL head unit or replace it with a aftermarket radio depending on your budget.
Good luck and keep us updated.

Jim is right; the amp is the issue. Not sure you can / should spend the money to try to integrate it as you won’t be happy with the sound anyway. Best bet is to go aftermarket. Not sure you could even get a stock jbl amp as the wiring schematic is different I believe

Stereos (stock) in tundras suck regardless of trim. Hopefully you didnt pay much, $ is better spent going to an aftermarket stereo.

well took it to a shop over the weekend, they said it was a 50/50 it would work. they said it is a nightmare to get it to work it work. so i just ended up getting an aftermarket stero.

Sorry for resurrecting an old post, but this is the first one that came up.

I recently was given a JBL headunit, speakers, amp, and subwoofer that I’d like to install in my 2015 Non-JBL truck. From what I read this is normally an issue with the amp.

Since I have the amp, it should work - right? Is the head unit worth replacing since it was free?

Could I plug in the subwoofer to the stock non JBL amp? If so, where does it mount?

If you have the OEM JBL Headunit & JBL Amp, no question they will work together, but you may need to add some wiring b/c your non-JBL truck might not have it. If you have an OEM JBL Headunit and some other amp, you need something called a DSR1 (or similar) to interpret what's coming out of the HU and feed those signals to the new amp.

Speakers are speakers, the 'compatibility' and sound you'll get is dependent on the specifics of the components you have and the amp you're hoping to plug them into. The subwoofer on the stock crewmax trucks mounts under/behind the drivers side rear passenger seat.

As to whether or not it's worth replacing, my opinion is that it's highly dependent on what performance you're expecting out of your stereo. I used to think I really wanted to replace the stock components and have a crazy loud system, but after a slight upgrade to the low end im pretty satisfied and can't see the value-prop for spending more money on it. You may gauge that differently.

I don't want anything crazy, just didn't know if the JBL Speakers were an upgrade over the Non-JBL speakers -- enough to warrant switching them out. Everything I got was free, just didn't know if the work was worth it. The subwoofer regardless, I'd like to install.

Can’t say - I’ve never had the non-JBL door speakers. It wouldn’t surprise me to learn they are very similar. Even the JBL door speakers are nothing to write home about imho
