Greetings, has anyone had a transmission dipstick break off in the tube? All metal - the bottom 2-3 inches broke off in the tube somewhere, at the top, middle or bottom, not exactly sure where. Good Times... Any suggestions as to how to proceed?

The dipstick tube comes apart, so you may luck out and be able to grab it that way. If not, I suspect you'll be dropping the pan.

Both the tube and the pan can be removed. Those are your only options I think. I would start with the tube and see if it's blocked. Maybe you'll get lucky and be able pull it out. If not, drop the pan, find the broken end and then replace the transmission filter while you're in there. You'll need a new FIPG from Toyota .

Not to thread jack but I hate the transmission dipstick. I feel like I have to take it out and put in like 5 times before I can get a good read on it.

Imagine… performing a complicated gear shift pattern then waiting for a special blinking light pattern to appear and then hurriedly climbing under the truck and removing the tranny plug, then waiting a very short time for the infamous “trickle” before reinstalling the plug, so you can pop back up to the cab and make sure the light didn’t change… just to check the fluid level.

You would instantly fall in love with your dipstick.

How so? It only takes me two. One to wipe it off and the other to get the read. Either front or back depending upon how the wind blows.

Try not to rotate the dipstick when you re-insert it.

Must be user error. My dipstick (which I am now grateful for) is pretty finnicky when I slide it back in

It is finicky. Once you play around with it, you’ll find the optimal angle to re-insert it without twisting.

Don't play around with it for too long or you may not be able to reinsert.

I can’t stand that New Kid on the Block has been. My BIL’s younger sis went out with his older brother Donnie. Another Dot Rat.
