Yesterday it was mentioned Toyota can’t comment on the Gen3 engine failures due to NHTSA. That made me wonder what the recall numbers actually reflect. There is some nuance in these numbers you’ll need to decide for yourself what they mean, if anything. Enjoy.

    Sources:

    • NHTSA – The recalls
    • Goodcarbadcar- The units built
    • The Car Care Nut- Gen 2 vs Gen 3 comparison- Many here have seen this, for those who have not, it is a good listen
      • He discusses engine failures @ 4:30 in the… 2007/2008 models, Toyota was tight-lipped, no comments… sound familiar?
      • 4.7 guy, he agrees, 4.7 was best @ 1:10

    Anecdotal

    • Echo chamber was not as large back then but was chatter on the streets
    • Expectations seem to be higher now
    • Consumer complaints have become the norm, posting with social media
    • Data can be twisted to support about any side, decide for yourself if/what these numbers mean

    My Surprises:

    • More Gen 2 Units built per year than Gen3’s
    • Huge dip in production 2009 – 2011 (Anyone know why that is, switched plants?)
    • Toyota has been consistently dinged on ‘Load carry capacity’, such a simple thing, so much for kaizen/TQM/TPS
    • Toyota has contacted @vtl to suggest you put 5w-30 in the Gen3 ;-)

    Thanks on all accounts Ryan…
I had tagged your name and decided it change that first sentence and mistakenly said NHTSA.
I just recall I stayed away for a few years due to the rumors. I don’t remember the single dude dropping a crate back then. But sounds like the same rumor (debunked) as about a year ago on the 2022.
The main reason for the post was to present some objective data and perspective. Not emotional cheerleading. My neighbor has a chainsaw he talks up like better than no other, best in the world! Ahhh, it’s a Stihl Farmboss dude.
The red are worst, green best. That 2018 model is towards the back of the pack but some folks say they’ve never had any issues.

Reduced production years also bumpy economically. Oil prices got pretty high in 08.

Pardon me, but I don't give a shit about "Turn Signals are not Bright Enough" recall. Meanwhile, there's still no recall for grenading V6TT engines. You twist that data yourself.

I’m not twisting anything, that is one of the nuances I mentioned.
Yes, silly it isn’t there. That is a NHTSA process issue. I’m sure many have complained.
I’m a Gen2 but I try to be objective. And I like what you bring to the table… far more technical knowledge than me.
