The transmission dip stick enters the transmission pan about 1.5” from the bottom of the pan. The Full Mark (hot) on the dip stick is about 7.5” from the bottom of the stick. How does this work?
Also, when attempting to read the transmission oil level on the stick it is very hard to accurately read. The s5ick is thoroughly cleaned, then inserted all the way into the tube. But once removed there is a light film of oil that goes much higher than the full mark. No matter how many times I take a reading the results are the same. Any ideas?
    Thanks in Advance

Are you reading it with the engine running and with the transmission at reading temperature? You usually look at both sides of the stick and read the side that’s lower. The other side tends to drag against the pipe and get fluid over the length of the stick making it unmeasurable. IDK, it’s usually obvious to me.

At one point toyota sent out replacement dipsticks for the 2000 (had one). Maybe yours didn't get the replacement.

Yep, there was an issue with the dipstick being too short IIRC. I think there was a TSB on this?

How can I tell if the dip stick is the new version?

Searched the web and found no images or links.

Thanks Bubba. But I think the images you attached are for the engine dipstick. I am concerned with the AT dipstick.

    My bad, misread thread.
As an aside….Just looked on TIS and see no TSB nor Service Campaign concerning transmission stick for 2000.

I was probably confusing with the oil dipstick. Appreciate the correction.

Yes, it appears to be over filled by a quart. The stick is difficult to accurately read. I think its been that way for years.

Oil appears clean has a brownish tint, but not burnt. Truck has 150,000 miles and has given me no problems, except it burns a lot of gas. Wondering if I should change filter and replace oil or do a complete flush, or do nothing.

    Thanks,
    Danny

How are you getting it to temp before you read it? I generally drive for 15-20 minutes non-stop on back roads myself not taking it over 40 mph.

I would recommend changing it out for synthetic via the transmission cooler exchange method. Let the engine pump out two quarts in a 5 gallon bucket and pour in 2 quarts via the transmission dipstick. Exchange requires 12 quarts altogether to account for the fluid in the torque converter.

Transmission filter is just a sheet of perforated metal, not cloth. Really, you'd be fine just doing a drain/fill, but of course, drain off the extra and refill to proper levels.

Rather than do a full flush, a lot of members prefer doing incremental drain-and-fills over the course of 6-12 months depending on how clean you want things to be.

And eating gas is normal for these trucks. :D

    I drive 10-12 miles

Do you happen to know which hose on the oil cooler on the radiator is out flow?
