Well I’m at a point where I’m considering pulling the trigger or trading in my 2023 F-150 Platinum Powerboost for a 2024 limited edition 1794 … Pretty much made my mind up that I’m over the powerboost with nothing but issues for the year I’ve owned it and love the 1794 limited (interior is unlike anything on the market today) but now reading about a good amount of engine issues/failures on top of just general reliability issues with the 3rd gen Tundras?!? Been a long time (15 years) since I last owned a Toyota (Tacoma) and was always used to Toyota being the most reliable truck on the market but now seems this may not be the case? Need some advise here, last thing I want is another brand new $80K truck with headache issues and the engine issues is a major concern now reading many reported issues with the iForce Max engine … I’ve got the dealer to $4K under MSRP and getting more than expected for my Platinum but now seconding guessing whether I want to go with the Tundra which I never thought I’d question until now …. Any help appreciated

Keep in mind, the engine failures are still a very small percentage of the total trucks out there. IMO, it's easy to get on a forum or youtube, see a bunch of people talking about engine failures and other issues, and then think they are just going to get a POS truck with every problem imaginable. Nothing is going to be perfect, but I also wouldn't assume the worst. Plenty of people on here have the new Tundras and are quite happy with them. Hope that helps.

Agree with you on this Brian and just seems like a good amount of issues noted and verified along with reliable 3rd party reviews questioning reliability issues with the 3rd Gen Tundras and figured it’d be worth reaching out to actual owners to see what they’ve experienced and feel about the ownership … had nothing but issues with my powerboost and dealer is giving more than expected on trade-in and definitely going to move out of this truck to either this 1794 Limited or a GMC 1500 AT4X with the 3.0

My last truck was an Eco Diesel Ram. You ever want to see hype, read their forums... Its not a matter of if, but when... why did we buy these?... This is the worst platform ever made....

Several... I mean several, very high mileage ones out there. Untold number of them sold across multiple platforms without issue. It was something like a 3% engine failure rate, which is high; but no where near what the forums made it out to be. It is so bad on there that I was in a wreck that totaled my truck and my spine. I was told "congrats." I left the forum and would have bought another one but the prices went to high to quick on them. Still several out there being used for fleet trucks and doing a great job.

This 4rd gen thing feels oddly similar to my previous experience. Are they perfect? No. Is Toyota working on it, yes. The EPA is changing the game on auto manufacturers and they are working to keep up. Personally, that is where my beef is.

All of that said, Eco's have had a bad run longer than a lot of powerplants and there are still plenty of fanboys of that system, rightfully so.

If I could do it all over again, I would have bought the same truck. The only reason, and I mean the only reason I didnt buy a 3rd Gen Tundra is the budget. I was going through a divorce and dealing with some property things and it kept me in a lower truck budget. I have no regrets. If things were different, I would be in a 3rd Gen or another Ram. I prefer the Rams interior in just about every category. I prefer the Toyota power train and dealer experience (the rare times i go there)

    TLDR:

Good luck with your decision. Opinions will vary.

The problem with YouTube is people want views so they make a catchy title and clickbait people into watching. Are there known failures on the tundra, sure. Is it to the extent people make it seem, no. People like to make a big deal nowadays for views. Sure there are documented engine failures and some dealers and seen a few tundras come in, while others have seen zero. I remember for a while in the 3rd Gen Tacoma forum, there was a few engines failure right outside the 60k powertrain warranty and people were losing their minds. Saying the 3.5 was unreliable and a crappy motor. It probably shouldn’t have went into the Tacoma, but people are getting plenty of miles on them with no issues at all. Are there going to be outliers, absolutely. There are plenty of 3rd gens into the higher miles already and people that own them tend to love them. I have a 2024 limited and it has been a way better experience overall than my Tacoma. I loved my 3rd Gen Tacoma, but seating position was not comfortable on long trips, small backseat and small bed made road trips very cramped, and the gear hunting while driving on the smallest slope was pretty annoying. Tundra has remedied all those issues for me and Toyota has not let me down with all the vehicles I have owned and I have faith my tundra will be just as reliable. Plus those limited editions are super nice and arguable way nicer than any ford I have seen!

Why not just find a clean 2.5 gen Tundra and be certain to have a great truck?

If you do make sure to find the extended warranty thread for a good deal on one.

    I didn't on this 2018 but would on a 2022 and newer.

To be fair, none of the new trucks (by all manufacturers) are good enough for me to go without one.

    I'd get the 1794 over a F-150 platinum in a heartbeat man.

Gasser HDs are the real next-gen trucks :D. GMs have IFS, cast-iron block, no turbos, no AFM/cylinder deactivation, and MPGs no worse (well, not much worse) than the 5.7 Tundras.

Appreciate all the input and know that there are a lot of folks posting clickbait along with owners with issues and understand there are potential issues with any vehicle you buy these days, they just aren't built like they used to be and just wanted to get input from a true Toyota Forum before pulling the trigger. I'm over the 2023 F-150 platinum powerboost and have had nothing but issues with it and only thing I'll miss is the room in the back especially the storage under the backseat which the 1794 limited doesn't have due to the batteries under the seat which is a bummer and can learn to deal with for a more reliable truck that the Ford .... Really appreciate everyone's feedback and will keep you posted!

On another note .... what is everyone paying for the extended mfg warranty on these? I've seen anywhere from $1500-$4K (factory extended warranty) and curious how many folks were able to negotiate a lower price on the extended warranty?
