I find that hilarious and troubling as well. Had that happen last year...mind blown.

but we can't teach them math.

Practical math has taken a backseat to theoretical math. We cram curriculum that is achievement test aligned and then run out of time to push financial literacy and elapsed time. Analog time telling is a bit dated imo...

Even worse when you give them the extra cents to round out their change and it baffles them.

example: at a register and total comes to $13.06. I hand them $20, they put the 20 into the register and it calculates the change I'm supposed to be given. Then I dig in my pocket and say I have the .06 to round up for you. Now they look at me like I ruined their day for having to add that .06 into the .94 to make a whole dollar.

I wasn't going to tell this one....but what the hell.

I was getting a chicken burrito and was paying and he already had it ready for the CC assuming that's what I would do. I handed him a 10.00 bill and he looked like I handed him a grenade with the pin pulled.

He then said "could you pay with CC, I don't know how to do cash transactions?" I asked how long he had been working there. 6 months. Nobody paid in cash when he was working? I had his manager show him how to perform these simple duties while I waited.

Well it also doesn't help when these developers are not held responsible for building schools and parks, but hell....let's build 12k homes in this school district.

My oldest has some classes with 38 students. Her HS can't even fit the kids in during lunch time (smallest cafeteria in the world) and the kids just sit outside to eat. Glad Colorado never has snow or severe weather.

She wanted to move to a charter school with 500 or less kids and we agreed. She has good grades and was teaching herself the lessons anyway. How are teachers supposed to work and be successful in these conditions?

I interviewed at one campus where the support staff (tutors, aides, etc) would pull students but had to work with them on the floor in the hallways or in the library in a corner because there were no extra rooms. Many of these kids have ADHD/attention issues and any little distraction derails their learning. Since my particular job is considered professional (degreed & certified) I get a room but it is usually shared with several others who also pull groups. It isn't uncommon to have 3 small groups of kids being taught different things in one room. Very difficult to do considering the nature of the kiddos my dept serves. Needless to say, I didn't choose that campus even when they offered me the position.

But the funding to those sports programs somehow always gets approved... This has to be such a tough job to tackle the uphill battle to improve student lives through learning. Much respect for what you do.

    I can believe it.

Son used to go to a private Christian school till this year. Type of school isn't important but the fact that it's private is....they were decently advanced.

I can't count the # of times he'd go to pay with cash, and the cashier who was easily 15-20 years older than him would be counting on fingers and toes with tongue sticking out...with my 9 year old son saying "Uh...I should get $3.40 back."

Usually, yes, but voters in the district I live in and pay taxes to are waking up (I work in a different district than where I live). For the past 2 school years, they have pushed a ridiculous bond proposal in the 200-250M range. The prior year they split it up into 3 propositions with the only prop passing was to fund 2 new campuses along with some improvements to playgrounds. This year they pushed the same 2 failed propositions (along with 2 new ones) for a grand stadium and natatorium with another proposition for a 9th grade only campus to alleviate the overcrowding at the HS. Voters approved ONLY the propositions for new campuses... We are overtaxed and if districts can't prove they're spending the money they DO have in a responsible manner, then taxpayers don't want to shell out anymore.

The neighboring districts are hurting badly from overcrowding so everyone is throwing out bond proposals like candy. Yes, the Houston Metro crowd is moving out here but so are many *ahem* immigrants and taxpayers are shouldering the burden.
