Stock bed rails question

New here and thanks. What cover can we use and still utilize the factory bed rails. I want the Backfilp MX4 but still want the rails to be usable. Is it possible or do I need to look at another cover? Thanks.

Not sure if you only want a hard top, but my roll up cover lets me use all 3 rails (even though it states that I have to remove the rail near the cab).
My cover is the Access Lorado from Agri Cover. I’m pretty happy with it.

I have the Bakflip MX4 and you can still use the bed rails. The system comes with adapters that allows you to reinstall the rails just a little bit lower. That was the deciding factor for me in getting the MX4.

I have the Toyota hard tonneau cover (tri-fold). It has the adapters to lower the side rails about an inch and a half. I just added an after market cargo divider this week.

 

Yep, MX4 comes with drop down brackets.

Very happy with mine.

 

I am getting ready to install a stock bed rail system in my 2019 tundra DC. Just saw your post. I will have to add the drop down brackets also.

1.) Is there an install video for the brackets?

2.) What kind of bed liner? Looks better than factory spray on. Looks more like carpeting.

3.) What are the other accessories on the rail? 12V/5V USB source? Water bottle? Not sure, but can you point to supplier website with options / mounting clips, etc. ?

Hi Dan, I assume you're asking about the pics I posted above?

1. My truck came with the bedrails already in it, they just got moved down when I had the tonneau installed. Should be pretty straightforward.

I really like it, it feels like carpet and has some padding, but it's actually made from Polypropylene so it won't absorb water or mildew and dries quickly. They're truck/model specific so they fit really well. If you don't want the full you can also get it for just the floor & tailgate, but I really like the full.

REALLY nice having power and lights back there.

In front of that is a fire extinguisher on a quick release mount. I would put the Amazon ling but for some reason Amazon's links are like three lines long. Just search "Quick release fire extinguisher mount". Like $20



This one is just a little bag clipped to the rail that I keep some lashing straps in so they're always handy.



Then of course there's the LED strips for bed lighting. The switch is underneath the bedrail just behind that box with the 12V/USB. Constant hot for both power and lights, so no futzing with anything to power up.

 

@Trd24Dan the new Mx4 covers no longer relocate the bed rails and instead utilize them to mount the cover, preventing the use of stock rail cleats.

 

Bummer, that kinda' seems like a backwards move. That was one of the features that attracted me to the MX4 in the first place.

Do you know if that's the case for all years, or maybe it's a 3rd gen thing?

I'm not 100% certain of this, but it seems like I've heard that the Undercover Armor Flex had drop down brackets similar to the MX4... can anyone confirm?

The instructions say 2007-2022+. Looks like they modified the cover to fit the previous gen tundra as well. I received the cover as a warranty replacement and I’m contemplating just keeping my original cover because the new design seems to have a handful of problems. The cover itself is about 1/2” shorter than the previous version and doesn’t seem to cover the bed adequately. Additionally, the panels are wider and now come within 1/4” of touching the brake light cameras when folded up against the cab, the smaller foam bumpers are the only thing keeping it from hitting the cameras (at least on the 6.5’ model). I would wait for them to fine tune the new model if I was in the market for a cover, or just go with something completely different.

 

The BAKFlip MX4 Tonneau Cover has recently been updated to include new installation hardware. The hardware allows you to mount the tonneau cover directly to the deck rails, rather than removing the rails and relocating them for installation. The UnderCover Armor Flex Tonneau Cover also mounts directly to the deck rail system.

Seems like that would make it difficult to secure things to the rails/cleats and have the cover closed.
