I bought some TRD Pro wheels on ebay. They were allegedly take-offs with low mileage. Seemed to be legit and have all the appropriate casting marks, e.g. BBS Forged, Japan, etc...

Initially I had some vibrations with the OEM wildpeak AT3s. I had them rebalanced and it didn't really solve anything.

Compared to a new set of wheels I basically got the tires for free, so I figured I'd put on new tires. Went with 265/70-18 Continental TerrainContact ATs as they are very well reviewed. The shop had a hell of a time mounting them. 2 plus hours of trying to seat each one with an accumulator (as I watched in horror from the waiting area). They also scratched up my wheels in the process. I still had a shake at 70+ and a clear balance issue at 45mph. Had them road force balanced and the new shop said all four were out and two of the tires required a lot of road force to balance, but that the wheels were fine and not out of round or anything.

Even after all that I still have shake at 70+ mph. Not death wobble bad, but more than I feel is acceptable since they are not super aggressive tires, and the original wheels and tires were totally smooth.

My next step is just putting the old wheels back on and seeing if this all goes away.

    Anyone have any thoughts?

I'm wondering if it's worth trying to get a new set of tires under the 60 day satisfaction guarantee?

Or am I just being a little princess, and this is life with A/Ts?

Getting the new tires may not do the trick. I'd be sure its the tires before playing that card. But I think you're going about it the right way. I know they said the wheels were ok but wow that sounds like at least one wheel has an issue

    Update:

Swapped to the stock combo and took it down my usual commute route. The vibration is still there but maybe 20% of what it is with the other set.

Seems to me the culprit is a more aggressive tire imparting more feedback into the vehicle or some innate vibration in the truck that’s exacerbated by the tires.

I think I’ll just deal for now and swap to a highway terrain tire eventually.

I will assume your suspension and steering components are serviceable and in good shape. If not, you should address that first.

Those wheels/tires are not balanced. Now it could be the rims, if they were in an accident or such. But I would say bent Pro wheels with no visible damage would be rare. So that leaves the new tires.

Shop should not have had such an issue trying to get them balanced. See if they will take back the tires. It wont get better with age/wear.

I have had this happen to me, new tires installed were out of round or some other manufacturing defect. Would not hold balance. After a long while trying them and 5-6 balance jobs the retailer agreed they were defective and gave me full credit $ toward something else.

Lastly, front end alignment being off can cause vibration and shimmy in a Tundra even if tires are balanced. Again, something I have experienced myself so if you have not aligned the front end in the last year, I would get it done.

Thanks for all that info. I’m also leaning towards the tires are defective or were damaged during installation. I had it aligned by the dealer after the last rebalance.

Final update and I will never speak of this again haha.

Swapped to some Michelin defender LTX m/s2 tires in 265/70-18 XL (not e-rated). Had them road force balanced and had the truck aligned by the tire shop rather than the dealer. Huge improvement and almost as smooth as the original wheel tire combo. I think my saga ends here.

    Here are the alignment specs:
