Let's talk about straight pipes!

Who's running them?

This all started today when I fired up the 2021 (just for grins) with all the exhaust removed from the flanges on back. To be honest, I was surprised at how good it sounded. But the biggest surprise was, my wife actually LOVED it. So we took the truck for a ride with nothing but flanges underneath, up the interstate a few miles, then returned home on the backroads. We took turns standing by the road listening to each other doing drive-offs and drive-bys. She's totally in love with the sound, and doesn't even want me to exchange my new 8" DD system for a 6". She very much wants me to get straight pipes.

"It's your truck, do whatever you want, but I love it just like this." (All you married guys know exactly what "do whatever you want" means.)

SO. Who's running straight pipes? Dumped, or stock tailpipe? Anyone who used to run them and didn't like it? Pros, cons, things to consider? Are the cops a problem? Do you have a resonator? ( I was surprised how NOT bad the drone was, even in this total redneck mode.)

I guess the simple answer is to exchange my 8" DD for their straight through system. Or, I could put this 8" system on my other truck, and do whatever I want with this one. All options are open. Thanks in advance. I never thought I would be considering this.

 

Straight pipes get really annoying on longer trips. You might drive with it unflanged for a few hundred miles to see how you really like them.

If you decide to get our straight pipe system without a resonator it’s $350 in stainless steel.

you’ll find that when you bolt it on the low end torque is way better than just unbolted exhaust. And mileage and driveability.

if you don’t get our system and just have an exhaust shop do it, just copy our system. Y pipe in back. Exit thru stock tailpipe. This will give you the best performance.

FWIW, this truck (2021, 18K on the clock) never tows, and never takes long trips. I only drive it on the proverbial sunny Sunday afternoons. I have another Tundra, older and with a lot more miles on it, which serves as my work truck/DD/tow mule/road tripper. It's getting the 8" DD system swapped onto it this weekend.

 

Just an update: I got the DD straight pipes installed, no resonator, stock tailpipe. I knew it would be quieter than just the unbolted exhaust, but this is a LOT LOT quieter. My wife is disappointed. It's not particularly loud or raucus at all, if your foot is light on the pedal. I cut a couple feet off the tailpipe in the hopes it would have a bit more/better tone with the sound coming out a "cave". I think it marginally is better.

Overall I like it, and I think I'll keep it this way. I'm considering a resonator is all. The drone is no worse than my 8" system (maybe not as bad, in fact), but I feel like the resonator improves the tone a little, in addition to taming the drone.

I actually chopped the tailpipes on both my trucks like this. I feel it helps just a little. Maybe a big tip might help a little too?
