    Good morning all,

Have a question about traveling with my firearm.

I'm planning a 2 week vacation to Texas from California with a stop in New Mexico and I'm thinking about taking my firearm with me. I know the state of California is really strict about transporting a firearm; we are required to keep the gun locked in a box and ammo separate but what are the specifics with states Arizona, Texas and New Mexico? I know Arizona and Texas are really relaxed on these laws but what should I be aware of?

Any advice is appreciated, thank you.

There are some separate rules for firearms in your vehicle when you are on a “journey”.

“Put simply, if you’re traveling through a state without stopping, and you’re legally allowed to possess your firearm in your home state and in your destination state, and you pack your unloaded firearm and ammunition in a locked hard-sided gun container in your trunk, you’ll have the Safe Passage provision as a defense available to you.”

No CCP yet so I would keep it in a lock box most if not the entire time. Whole reason really to take it is to hit the range with my brother out there in Texas.

This - and then work on getting your ccp, especially since the only reason you want to carry it is to go to the range when you reach your destination. Too many things can go wrong and land you in a lot of hot water and expense. Juice isn’t worth the squeeze.

I have Road trip traveled with guns a couple of times and now I would choose Not to do so again reason is Sure there might be a "State" regulations for pass through travel with guns but some counties interpret that law different than others and we all know how certain County Mounties love to see that $$$$ that out of state plates may just help make their quota.. now your busted...

At this point with all the locking, just leave the pistol at home.

Guess RPGs will have to suffice.

Cops working interdiction get an extra big boner for out of state plates so Leisurely and lawful driving all the way through. No zipping along at 80 in a 65 if that's what you're used to on your commute

Yeah, that's what I'm leaning to now. Looks like range trip may be off the itinerary. Gonna replace it with famous Texas BBQ.

My last trip to CA we left most of the weapons at home due to all the different laws....and I was with federal law enforcement officers.

I personally would call each state agency you plan on traveling through and write down each state statute.

We had to do this on our last trip to TN when traveling through Illinois. (Lock it up

Most 'ranges' have rental firearms if you just want to blast off a few rounds..
Depending on where you are going, some have full auto rentals, but they aren't cheap.

When I used to go to St. Louis a few times a year, I'd have to unload my G26 and separate the pistol from the loaded mags when entering Missouri..
That was before both states had any kind of carry license reciprocity.

    Enjoy your trip..

that’s all well and good until you’re the one pulled over and getting searched; they can make your trip pretty unpleasant

yeah, only a matter of time before this devolved. Consent has nothing to do with it. It’s about being smart, responsible and mitigating unnecessary risk / expense / legal issues. In this particular case, if you consider consenting and it being a “thin, blue foreskin bootlicker” to roll the dice for the sake of going to the range and putting a few rounds in a target at your destination, you do you. That’s the question - nothing more and nothing less. Again, juice isn’t worth the squeeze in this scenario

The OP asks a question on the legality of transporting a firearm through multiple states and you decide to turn it into a 2A discussion?
That's getting a bit political is it not?

That site has all up-to-date information on the subject, for each state.

Your destination state may be constitutional carry and if so, you may* be able to carry concealed without a permit. Open carry may* be an option as well. Get a good holster, belt, and reload carrier before you go. Pepper spray is a good idea to carry anytime you are armed.

Carry your gun and enjoy that right where you are going. :)

*Some states have crazy laws: I believe Texas allows open carry but only if one pays the tax (concealed carry permit). Rather funny to need a concealed permit to carry openly. Handgunlaw.us probably covers all of that well. I have never looked into visiting Texas.

no, guess the point went over your head? if your intention is to conceal carry a firearm, regardless if you have a permit that has reprocity the states you are planning to go through, if its a right to carry state, whatever the case may be, no matter what do that job well, conceal and keep a low profile always so that YOU only know you are carrying. no need for consent to search, or consensually verbal encounters with anyone including the police, they arent your friends in case you have not realized that yet. Not political, its a fact. That is all.

Carry permits are literally the theft of a right which is then leased back to the victim for a short period. That's exactly what a "carry permit" is. However, the sort of people that are victimized this way tend to be the people that have a lot to lose. The criminal, he has nothing to lose. Jail time is a vacation to him, his mugshot free advertising.

I have known great guys that never paid the carry tax. Finally, WV state law changed to catch up with their thinking on the subject. Blood has not run through the streets. I think our crime rate even went down after the tax was abolished.

But yes, OP, you can either not bring it or bring it but you have to educate yourself more. Personally I'd be more afraid of even getting it to the airport in CA than carrying it wherever you are going.

I got curious. Found this. I'd buy a holster, reload carrier, pepper spray (checked baggage) and enjoy myself in Texas!

I have legally carried a firearm with me in any vehicle I have traveled in since 9-1-1. Even in Ca.
I would recommend the OP carry a handgun at minimum, for your own personal safety on the road. Yes you will have to have it, and the ammo locked up, separately in the vehicle while driving in Ca and NM., I would have them close enough to access and unlock if needed. Also when you stop and stay overnight at a hotel/motel, you can legally have it with you loaded and ready to rock n roll.

Possessing a firearm at an Airport in CA. is not a problem, as long as you play by the regulations. Has to be declared and taken to checked in baggage. Possessing a handgun in California is not nearly the problem it is in the North Eastern States, despite the ignorant fear mongering that gets spread. If traveling by car just make sure to have the firearm in a locked container ( or locked trunk ) with ammo in a separate locked container ( ammo can). In California you can legally possess a firearm at your residence, including a temporary residence ( Hotel/Motel ) or Campsite.
The downside to California is Magazine Capacity limit ( 10 rnds ) and prohibition of defined "Assault weapons". Standard Ranch Rifle Mini 14's, and Non detachable magazine SKS's are O.K. Most AR-15's and AK's are not.
