Stress crack in new windshield

Woke up this morning to a crack in my windshield. There was nothing that would have caused that last night weather wise and my neighborhood is pretty low traffic, so I don’t suspect any person did that (no marks, chips, or dents).
I took it to the dealership today and they said it’s a stress crack and covered under warranty (I think he said 1 year or 10K miles for glass).
This is probably the least sexy post this forum will see, just putting it here in case it helps someone.
The truck is a 2024 SR5 DC 4x4 with an 8’ bed. I’m only at 2,200 miles. The build date on it is 11/23.

 

Thank you for putting that data point out there. Just a thought they might be “being nice” and calling it a stress crack so Toyota replaces it. Thank them.

Just so we don’t mislead anyone here, I have to say that being “nice” isn’t a thing at car dealerships. These people are 100% profit driven. The only reason they warrantied my claim is because it is very obviously a manufacturing (installation) defect. Toyota will pay the dealership’s mark up and cost readily. My dealership is happy to do that work since they are getting paid by Toyota.
I’d love to live in a world where we are all nice to each other and get to live off of that. Maybe one day we’ll get there.
In the meantime, I’ll at least be grateful that they didn’t make me have to fight to prove my claim.

 

Are you familiar with generalization as a scientific term? It’s the idea that data taken from a randomized small group can be statistically relevant and transferred to the general public at large.

In simpler terms, whatever population you choose you’re going to find a certain percentage of essentially every kind of person from saints to assholes. It’s the way of the world. Now, one could argue that certain professions might have a slightly larger group of one kind or the other, but you might want to shelve the absolutes. The idea that “they are all X” is dehumanizing and pretty damned ignorant.

They are taking care of you. The service writer could have made your life difficult and didn’t. Plenty of these guys are alright and do things to help people out when they can. I’m no fan of the industry but it certainly isn’t going to kill you to thank someone for christs sake.

Did they do the ball point pen test? They are to trace over the crack with the pen in an attempt to feel a chip in the glass.

I had a windshield on my old 2nd gen Tacoma replaced years ago and the installer I used said Toyotas always were super easy to replace the windshields on because the window frame was square from the factory where other brands would usually require a lot of effort to get a new windshield back in after an old one is removed. Maybe that's not the case now, or maybe it's just a bad windshield which does happen.

With everything getting more expensive every company in the supply chain is trying to cut costs.

 

Just wanted to follow up and close this one out: The new windshield got installed today. It took a month just to have it shipped- but it seems like they are more readily available now.
The install was flawless- super clean inside and out. And before @ZappBrannigan gets all upset again, I thanked them for doing a great job.
Interesting little note is the line item on the invoice for “windshield camera calibration” was $499. Yikes. It all got warrantied.

Here’s the thing I heard a rock hit my windshield , didn’t think much since I didn’t see anything . Next morning I saw a crack and then it’s growing now on another section . Insurance covers it free and going thru safelite, also should I go thru the dealer instead ??

 

Dealer will use OEM glass, some 3rd parties will use aftermarket glass. I am on my 3 rd windshield but my glass guy told me next time it will aftermarket due to insurance rules. Might not really make any difference I guess.

 

Crazy because I had same issue with my 2 4Runners and my wife’s 4runner. Toyota uses shitty glass , I ended up replacing all windshields on 4Runners and they didn’t use oem for some . Didn’t really make a difference I guess .

 

I have a very small ding on the windshield of my Platinum, which has an acoustic glass windshield.

Anyone know if they replace it with another acoustic glass windshield? Would dealer and aftermarket like Safelite be different?

 

Might even be better. He told me they have to take the lowest bid that is available. The 3rd Gen 3rd party windshields are now hitting the marketplace.
