I gotta drive two hours to the shop to get it fixed. I think I have a bad driver side wheel bearing. Is it risky to drive that distance? It’s got a weird growl

Just take it easy and you should be fine. I had one start howling at the start of a 600mile trip, it sounded like hell but it drove fine until we got back home to replace it. I didn’t do any of the side activities we had planned and took it easy on the truck as best I could

Thank you for the reply. Did yours growl on every wheel rotation? Definitely at 10 miles an hour to 30 sounds really bad.

he growls at every rotation, and I can feel it with the speed up

Front or back? What yr truck? How many miles?
I don't think anyone would say it's ok to drive on a bad bearing
Jack up the wheel see if it has excessive play or looseness that would be a no go for sure
On the other hand I as well as many others have driven on noisy wheel bearings use your judgement if the truck drives fine I'm sure you'll be ok

It was more of a higher speed growl, but probably still auditable at slower speeds
4wd? Does it go away in 4wd at all?

That doesn't sound good especially if you can feel it

That could narrow it down specifically to the front or rear

Old time quickie check for front bearings.... swerve the vehicle left to right. If the noise increases going left and goes away when going right, the right front is probably bad. If it goes away when going left and increases going right, the left front is probably bad.

That's how I narrowed mine down to right front. Just got around to changing it today. No more noise.

I could hear and feel it on the back right with same technique. It works:) you are correct
