Hello everyone! I’ve been reading on this quite a bit. Recently got a 2015 and there is surface rust on welds and in certain parts. It is not terrible but something I want to address.

I have a wire brush and wire wheel. When I do the brush it seems to break up the rust nicely and then I was going to spray fluid film. It does not completely get rid of the rust on weld seems and such.

the next option I tried was wire wheel and it seems to really strip the paint. I’m curious if this is a bad idea and I should just use the brush since it’s more surface rust??

Lastly with the clear fluid film I can still see some rust after applying and breaking it up with brush. If you are trying to cover it up do you suggest the black fluid film?

I just want to make sure I’m doing this correctly. Thank you everyone! Learned a ton on here.

There are a lot of people who will say fluid film, por15, etc. I have had great results with surface shield spray. Wire wheel, wipe clean and spray the surface shield. Has held up great

Thank you! With wire wheel do you strip all paint off? That was my concern with wire wheel as mine is more surface and spotty.

Wire wheels on drills tend to burnish dirt into the steel surfaces you are cleaning. Follow with a grinder, sanding or other means to remove this film. I use a rust converter before self etching primer.

I used a soft wheel that didn’t strip paint. Always cleaned with alcohol soaked rag after and let dry. Parts that went to bare metal I hit with a self etching primer as above and a quick coat or two of rustoleum.
