I have had a 2014 TRD SR5 for a couple of years now and never put more than ~17.5 gallons in the tank when the computer says "0 miles to empty".

The truck has the 26 gallon tank.

I am unable to find this particular issue through web searches. I know that many people have noted that the computer says "0 miles" with 3-5 gallons left in a 26 gallon tank, but I am coming up short by much more than that. If I was putting 21-22 gallons in at "0 miles", I'd understand.

Has anyone else had this specific issue?

Is it only taking 17 gallons, and something is causing the gas station pumps to shut off early? (Evap system or similar?)

OR- Is the computer failing to acknowledge the remaining 9 gallons of fuel?

My next steps are to carry a gas can and run out of gas, and/or try to manually "overfill" it and see how much I can force into the tank.

That noted, I am hoping someone might have some other experience/wisdom first.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

8 gallons is roughly the "reserve." 6-8 gallons will always surround the fuel pump so it stays cool and doesn't overheat. Not a problem but more of an annoyance...swap to a 38gallon at a pick'n pull yard or go bigger with Transferflow (46gal)...more freeway driving will net a small change in how many gallons until "0" shows...it's usually good for another 30-50 miles of driving for what it's worth...best way to find out is to bring a 5gallon jug of fuel and "really" test your extra miles you can go...

I understand that these trucks seem to have a substantial reserve, but 9 gallons? That's what I am getting on the 26 gallon tank. I am seeing the bigger reserve (6-8 gallons) in discussions about the 38 gallon tank, but I haven't on the 26 gallon, maybe I am just missing those comments/discussions in my searches so far.

I am fine with the 26 gallon tank, and fine with a big reserve if that's actually normal, but I want to be sure I am not experiencing some other, potentially otherwise consequential, issue.

I am not trying to be contrary, I appreciate your thoughts.

All of them have a large buffer regardless of tank size. It's for a few reasons. As mentioned before it keeps the pump cool, but it also keeps people who run down to "empty" from stalling on inclines. Crawl under the truck and look at the length of the tank. A decent incline could pretty readily pull all the fuel away from the fuel pickup if there were only a gallon or two in the tank.

At past empty I am only adding <17.5 gallons, 4 gallons less than you, and 9 gallons less than tank capacity. Hence my questions...
