Totally understand being tied to a location because of work. I'm in the same boat, but I'm out in the rural parts anyway. If my work was transferable to another area and I could make the same money I would definitely consider moving somewhere like Southern/Central Utah. Maybe even Northern AZ. I can't stand tons of heat, but I'm getting tired of the heavy winds during the winter months too.

I think the only thing I'll miss is the CO weather and access to all the rivers and mountains. But we, Colorado, have become the next CA and I can't do it anymore. The west has been my home for over 50 years but won't be once our girls graduate. And as @GODZILLA pointed out, urban sprawl is real. We won't be living anywhere near a major freeway.

Nailed it. That has to be the biggest drawback to Wyoming. The winds can be brutal.

I have a similar set up, I am on 5 1/2 acres with 200 oak studded behind me that a guy uses to graze cows.
I could never afford 200 acres but having them there and having access is the next best thing.

I've had parts literally get blown off my vehicles as I've driven down the highways in WY. And there's those days where you see one or two semis blown over on the highway from the wind. The desolation and no state income taxes are what have kept me around. I could probably exist in hell if I was not being subjected to taxes of any kind, now that I think about it. Utah is nice but its becoming the new Colorado unfortunately. I lived in southern New Mexico for years and years, its just as windy and crime is off the charts these days from what my friends tell me.

There really is no perfect place to live.
