Hey YorkT. I’d plant the shrubs and other trees for a shelter belt. The mess at the neighbor’s place has the potential to get worse and that could affect your property values if you need to sell your place. Maybe you can spread out the cost over a couple of years or find out if you can get seedlings from your county conservation office (if your area has one).

People who really are "dog lovers" wouldn't feed it without your permission. They fall into the stupid people category imo.

My previous neighbor was an older guy who passed about 7 years ago. He fashioned a metal "L" shaped hook about 3 feel long that we would dip over my four foot fence to grab my dogs frisbee (which he would bring over to the fence once seeing him) and throw it for him (back into my fenced yard). Sometimes I'd look out the back and see him tossing the Frisbee with my dog on a nice day both of 'em just happy as can be... what a good memory. The hook still hands from my fence...

The new neighbors had older dogs (pit/lab mixes). When they passes (3 and 1 year ago) they thought it would be a good idea to go adopt a 8 month old male pit. That lasted about two weeks which was probably best for everyone imo. It often takes time energy effort and alpha person to raise an alpha breed pup (and that wasn't going to be the case), my wife and I were definitely concerned for our kids around it.

Took my dog to hang with 9 other guys I worked with while we had a feast including a smoked brisket. I had several guys ask if my dog could have any food - which he is not allowed ppl food - they respected this with no issues. In reality a dog is your property which you're responsible for. I don't care how others treat their property, or if they feed them ice cream sundaes, but have some respect for others.

My four year old daughter asked my wife about a week ago, "what if Dag bit me?" My wife says you mean on accident? My daughter replied "no, on purpose." Without a a thought my wife said "your dad would take it outside and kill it." Now I love my dog which I've raised from an 8 week old puppy for 9 years, but she was absolutely right. However this is unlikely an acceptable solution for a neighbor... lol -- the others provided great ideas though.

I've got one for you - my neighbor feeds a wild possum every night! I have had an animal path through my yard for a couple years and wasn't sure why. My neighbor has a piece of string holding his gate open all the time, wasn't sure why he did that either. Then one night I saw him feeding table scraps to a wild possum and it clicked. So we let the dogs out to bark at it and scare it away, but nope! The thing is so domesticated now that it's fearless. It ended up in our backyard and our dog ran up to it barking and it didn't even blink and eye, just stood it's ground. Next thing you know my dog and the possum are sniffing each other like it's another dog.

Fast forward a week and I was cutting the grass. I dump the grass in the common area behind our houses like everyone else does. The neighbor came out yelling that I was dumping grass on his land. I said, okay if you think that's your property, I'll be glad to dump it a couple of feet over instead. I just dump it out of the way because my kids play back here, but it's fine. He kept talking smack, so I said "hey, do you think it's legal to feed a wild animal? We're going to have a serious problem if that possum bites one of my kids or dogs" and he responded that it's a wild animal and it can eat wherever it wants. UUUGGGGHH! I'm the kind of guy who generally gets along with everyone, so it really bothers me to exchange words with the grumpy old neighbor. He can crawl back under his rock.

I hope this solution works for you. Hopefully someone here has a direct experience with it or you can give us feedback soon. Once that dog shuts up.

Sure have a nice property there. How many acres is that? We want to move further out of town but with property values at their peak where I live I think we're staying put. At least after my chat with the lady down from me I haven't seen my dogs going to her fence line anymore.

My buddy tried one of those ultrasonic things for his dog years and years ago and it didn't work but he probably just bought some cheap piece of junk at Walmart.

    No complaints where I live.

Neighbors behind me on 5 acres are a great family who've been here for generations. Vacant property to my east, north is alfalfa fields. On my west side is a younger couple who's husband has a nice Tundra.

    Winning.

Thank you. The house & "yard" sits on 8ac. We have full access (hunt/fish/hike/snowshoe/ snowmobile) to the 550 surrounding us from the previous owner, and first rights if they decide to sell it.

And congratulations on the apparent solution to your initial problem. Glad it worked out favorably.

I am green with envy of that land (puns intended)...
Houston area west 50+ miles did have a parcel land for sell, 500+ acres and asking for just under $200K, but farm use.
So can build a house+ barn/garage but not commercial usage, but I would certainly don't want geese for neighbors....

A house + Barn/Garage on 500ac sounds perfect - what would you be doing commercially out of the property?

Meaning you can't turn it into an apartment or housing project, since it's a Arg land, it will stay that purpose, you can plant or raise livestock's, take your pick.

We have some really good neighbors to our south. However, the house adjacent north was a rental for years. We've experienced all sorts there. One of the most memorable was a young family with two kids probably between 5-10 years of age. The kids would launch rocks over their fence and onto our house. One time we were in our backyard, heard the sound of things skipping across our roof then saw the rocks hit near us. I collected the rocks, knocked on their front door and proceeded to explain. The parents couldn't really object because the rocks matched what they had in their flower bed. They apologized and promised it wouldn't happen again but it did several times. After that, ever time we brought it up, the parents would act as if we were complaining too much. Needless to say, we were joyful when we saw the moving truck outside that house.

This is why kids misbehave. Because of bad parents. If they don't get taught, they grow up acting like kids in adult bodies. Damn shame on those people for allowing their kids to be little rats.

Very true. I moved to my current location during the beginning of COVID, and it was more in a haste (last rental owner's parents are taking over, I had 60 days to move out) but I did get to talk to the owner before making an offer. He/she both told me bits of the neighborhood, who's who and does what and how many kids, blah blah blah..... a little overwhelm, but at the end, that's also one of the factor that we decided we want this house, because of the neighborhood structure.
Wouldn't say we know everyone, at least we nod heads and say hi, some neighbors we are real good friends, pet watching or kid watching when we run late from school bus arriving (usually within 5 mins). Overall, I love this place, granted, some you never see, some you talk to almost everyday, but at least I don't have too much trouble neighbors, and that I am grateful.

I finally got away from everyone. You really have to move AWAY from everything to not deal with anything or anyone. Miles out.

Tired of sirens, loud cars/Harleys, snow plows, music and people's dogs shitting on every square inch of navigable surface. And barking dogs, jesus, the barking dogs... that bark and bark.... and bark. I don't know if the owners think it's cute or if they are stupid or deaf or what.

We had a back side neighbor that kept two (or three, can't tell) dogs outside all year round.
This is Houston, TX. Summer is 105F and they are in cages, or chained i don't know. Even during the freeze we had, they are outside.
I am pretty sure plenty called the cops and animal control (or whatever units for animal abuse) and they got plenty of visits, but they still keep them outside....
Sometimes they bark into the night, and trust me, there are more dogs in the neighborhood than I ever know....

Wife and I have this same agreement. Once kids are done with high school we're moving away. 5 more years and counting. I'll be right next to you. But away all the same.

Same here, once the kids are done with high school, we would like to move outward, maybe not so far away, but a good piece of land to be away from it all isn't a bad idea.....
I am not sure about raising horses and all that, but to live simple and enjoy Tundra, sounds like a plan....

Just keep in mind that the urban sprawl continues to expand, so what is just outside now will be suburbanized in 5 years, and swallowed in 10. Put yourself a half hour to an hour from the nearest town with a wal-mart and it stays quiet for longer.

You won't regret it. I've gotten so used to the quiet now that I can't even sleep in hotel rooms anymore. More logistics involved and more commuting for groceries/supplies, but it's worth it.

In the Houston area you will need to cut that timeline by half and it still amazes you how fast it grows.
Yea, but if I successfully getting another parcel land, I could care less where others are, they are at least 200+ acres each, so your "closest" neighbor could be 15 miles away either way, front entrance from the road to your front door can be a good 3-5 mile drive.

Whatever this forum told me to do
    agreed

    houston is awful

demographics are getting worse inside the beltway

anything outside the beltway is still civilized

    apartment complex’s are everywhere

    hospitals are popping up everywhere

both are kryptonite to a long lasting civil society

I don't like any cities. The larger the population concentration the more the bleeding hearts disconnected from reality ruin it.

That is why I live in Cypress, but I do work by Beltway 8 & Westhiemer area.
Cypress is getting very packed, too. But the area is just about 20-30 years in most places (some are older, but generally) so that's a nice spot, but those newer houses are charging through the roof.....
We recently went open house looking at some of the newer lots, and some are outside of the 99, wouldn't be a bad idea if both wife and I can work remote, otherwise driving to work would be hell enough to quit on the spot.
