Pulleys and play - how much is normal?

I finally got around to changing out my brown 18 year old radiator and my worn out fan clutch. Changing the thermostat and radiator hoses while I'm in there.

As I was looking at everything I noticed all the accessories and pulleys also look original (208k miles). Is there anything else here I should be replacing?

The idle pulley has some play in it, not a lot, but I can push the top in while pulling the bottom out. The fan clutch bracket has about the same amount of play in it. The tensioner is pretty easy to move using a short 14mm wrench, I think the spring is weak. I'm leaning towards replacing these.

The alternator has absolutely no play in it, but appears to have 208k miles. I'm wondering if this should be swapped preventatively. Power steering pump has no up or down play, but I can push the pulley in slightly (not enough to see with the eye but can feel it). AC seems fine and the crank pulley seems fine.

Timing belt looks great (PO had the Toyota dealership do the timing belt and water pump about 2 years ago.

Does it sound like i should replace any of these pulley related items while I've got it apart? Or am I worried over nothing?

Anyway, with serp belt off, spin the pulleys. Sound good? Are any wobbly feeling, i.e. more than 1-2mm play? That's the general gauge I've used on every vehicle I've owned, not necessarily the Toyota method.

 

Thanks. I've actually got the Toyota maintenance records and while most the entries aren't very descriptive, it does explicitly have the timing belt and water pump on there somewhat recently.

Ok. I'll check for that much play tomorrow. Sounds like using that, my crank, AC, and steering should be fine, the idler and fan bracket might have that much but I'll see.

 

Most people will wait until it fails but I decided to proactively replace mine around 190k. I did the serp belt tensioner at the same time because it's a bitch to remove and you have to unbolt the alternator to get it out.

I'd replace probably that.

I haven't done my fan clutch or bracket yet but I probably should.

 

I waited until I had some noise from my accessory belt drive, then replaced my idler and tensioner simultaneously.

I'd replace the tensioner and idler pulleys, they're not that costly. I just had mine replaced yesterday. The tensioner was locked up and wore the belt down to nearly nothing in just one short drive home from work. Easy insurance.
