Anyone run TRD lift with Dobbinsons rear springs

Has an anyone ran the 3” TRD lift and used Dobbinson rear springs to help with squat while towing. If so how’s the ride any photos of which spring you chose?

 

I'm running Rough Country 1.5" Lift Rear Springs with The OEM TRD Lift Bilsteins and the ride and towing quality has been much better.

I have a 2.5 level lift in front currently.

I am not towing, but I am carrying a 400+ pound topper on the bed of my truck. These are the C59-845V rear axle Dobinsons springs, which have a 550-770 pound rating. I also had a PR59-1413-TUN adjustable panhard bar (track bar) installed; I bought both the springs and bar from exitoffroad.com. The 3" TRD lift was installed last week at my dealership, they also installed the Dobinsons parts while they were doing the lift. The Dobinsons springs will supposedly add 2" of lift to the rear axle, while the TRD lift will take away one inch; currently, I have slightly more lift over the rear axle than the front (for reference, 41 3/4" from the ground up to the bottom of the rear wheel well trim VS. 40 3/4" at the front).

Not TRD lift but Kings all around with Dobinsons rear springs C59-841V(2” lift, 0-110lb load)

trailer w/ 80 series was 7200lb for reference. Minimal squat and towed great from NY to VA

Looks great TundraTT! Just ordered my C59-841V to replace my OME 2866 that were too high on rear. Will post pics, our trucks are pretty similar Army Green 6.5’ bed with the digicam wheel wells! Love your covert bumper too! Cheers man!

I have a question, seeing as there are three Dobinson 2” options for our trucks. I ordered the 841V 2” but didn’t pay enough attention to the added rear weight part. @TundraTT do you feel that the 841V is enough lift even when towing? @Saltydog711 I see you have the 843V I’m wondering if you have a topper or rear bumper, or are getting the higher poundage for expected towing and hauling etc?

Is the ride quality affected if a coil with higher rear end weight is used without a constant weight being applied (topper, tow, haul)? Would be nice to have the extra weight so I don’t have sag, but don’t want to have the ride be terrible w/o weight in back. Trying to determine if I should exchange my 841V with the 843 or 845V

I think the 841v is perfect for my situation(no extra rear weight and occasional towing). The ride with and without a load is outstanding. I’m not sure how the step up would do with empty weight but it shouldn’t be that crazy, I would assume. I would email Dobinsons and they should be able to let you know for sure.

 

I ordered the 843V, they just arrived and I should have them put on Tuesday or Wed. I ordered the 220-440 weight just because I tow from time to time, I’m not a fan of the squat look, and I wanted a slight rake since after putting on my TRD lift seems lower in the rear.

 

Thanks @TundraTT and @Saltydog711 it’s great to compare these springs thanks to your help. TundraTT in your pic even when towing the rears look 100% level with front. I’m expecting a 1.5” rake rear higher than front with no load and probably level under load. I think the added rear weight on the 843V and 845V are for permanent additions like rear bumper, topper/cap, fold out spare etc. I’ll call Dobinson next week and ask them some questions about this, and will post what I learn. I think these springs are going to be amazing. Happy I got them in red too, they match the front TRD lift coilover really well

 

End of next week I will have this exact combo with about 700 pounds of weight on my truck with my topper build. I chose the HD 750lb coil. I’ll post pics for you. Im hopeful that the Dobinsons will be fine. Eyeing the OME 800 if not.

I’m pretty confident the ride will be pretty bad when you are not towing. You might be better off with the helper air lift system.

 

Yes, very level. It actually surprised me.

 

I spoke with Dobinsons today asking about whether the C59-841V is the best choice for towing and still using my bed often, or whether I should switch to the C59-843V. As always their support is fantastic. I learned that while all of these are 2” coils, they will only be 2” unladen if you have the constant weight listed.

• Weight listed refers to additional product weight such as roof rack, drawers, rear bumper, swing out spare, etc. For most coils, 100lbs of added weight drops the rear by about 1/4″

I don’t have much constant weight when I am not towing or hauling. I asked whether it would be better to go with the 843V to have more capability for towing/hauling. l learned that’s not needed if I don’t have constant weight, that’s what the rake is for (I will have 1.5” of rake).

If I don’t have constant weight, the other two springs will “sit much taller and ride much stiffer” when unloaded. They are only 2” when they have the constant weight on them, and otherwise will sit higher than 2” which I don’t want.

I would need accessories such as rear bumper, topper, rooftop tent, drawer system etc to lower them in that case. I was told that when I tow/haul, the 841V will handle that perfectly and will be close to even (ie the rake will descend to even, as we saw with your towing on them @TundraTT !

Swapping out the OME 2866 for the Dobinson C59-841V on Thursday. Will take pics. Cheers!

Added so much rear lift and I’m at 800lbs constant in the bed. I was thinking I’d be level since they are 550-750 or what not. I know ride quality can suffer at the front and rear end of the ratings but I have to say that my ride quality is pretty great right now. I was constantly told not to get if I wasn’t hauling constant load. Ride quality would suffer.

I’m super happy with this purchase though !

 

Hi all, I had my Dobinson C59-841V - 2" lift with 0-110lbs added rear end weight installed yesterday. I was dismayed when I returned to the truck because my rear is now actually raised 1" higher than my OME 2886, instead of lowering as promised. It is way too high. Something strange is going on. I called Dobinson and they asked me to measure, I am 27.5" hub to guard on the back and 23.5 in front now. They asked me whether I have spacers in back. I specifically asked the installers during the OME and Dobinson installs to check for spacers, and they said there aren't any. I took pics for Dobinson. If it isn't spacers I have from the TRD lift kit, then they must have mislabeled my shocks (perhaps unlikely). I appreciate your eyes checking whether you have this same upper ledge above your rear coils, and same bottom frame below the coils. Thanks guys- T

 

That looks like an inch or two too high! I can only speculate but I would say either mislabeled or maybe the trac bar was installed while the vehicle was still on a lift. Either way I’m with you on your observation

 

Thank you @TundraTT ! I really appreciate your post. Can you let me know more re the trac bar being installed while on a lift possibility? How can I determine whether this happened during my TRD lift installation? Dobinsons is looking into the mislabeling possibility. I can say that despite the too-high lift, the Dobinson rear coil ride is already much better than the OME was!

 

No problem, I hope it gets resolved for ya!
The top and/or bottom trac bar bolt that’s tighten while the rear axle is in full droop(ie. Lifted On a lift) may cause enough preload to cause the trucks rear end to sit higher when it’s lowered back down on the tires. That was always taught to me but I’ve never tested the theory.

Also, I added a pic of the comparison between the two just in case you’re able to do a quick comparison of your own. I’m sure dobinson will ask for spring measurements from you soon.

 

I am running the dobinson c59-843v springs with the trd lift. I have an ARE canopy weighing close to 200 pounds. With stock tires and air pressures, the measurement from ground to fender skirt is approximately 41.25 in the rear and 40.375 in the front, less than an inch from front to back and the truck rides fine.
To Taikowaza: your truck has the spacer installed, maybe find a different installer. If you check on the drivers side, just because it is easier to see, look just above the frame to where the center of the spring perch would be. There will bea bolt there- there shouldn’t be. That is the bolt that holds the spacer in position. I believe you can just see it in your next to last picture.

 

Thank you ram_bow!!! I had a strong feeling this was the issue. Both the OME 2886 and the Dobinson were/are way too high. It can’t be a coincidence. I was very clear with the installers to make sure they checked for spacer. I had read that the TRD lift kit added a 2” spacer to the stock TRD Offroad coil. Both times they told me there wasn’t one in there. I’ve paid them twice for installation at $250 each time. Extremely unhappy and will see what they say about this. The more I look at the photo the clearer it is that this is a 2” spacer, how could they not have seen this.

Can you LMK the process for removing the spacer so I can give them instructions? To confirm, the spacer is above the shock, at the top of (what I am calling) the dampener that extends down into the coils? I did not go to the dealer to have this done b/c their rate is even higher. I should be able to do this myself but have always steered away from suspension jobs, perhaps I should educate myself (I do have a good hydraulic jack and jack stands). TY again ram_bow, if I can get these spacers out I know I’ll be so much happier. Ideally the shop will step up and realize their error, and swap them as a courtesy. Somehow I doubt this is how it will go down, however will see. Cheers Ram_bow and if there’s any documentation or links to the spacer removal that would be like gold to me.

The pic I’m reattaching is to confirm that this is the spacer that needs to be removed, via a bolt from above the frame if I’m understanding correctly. How will that cylindrical damper that extends down into the shock be mounted, via the same bolt perhaps w/o the spacer.

 

That is the spacer. It is held in position by one nut (24mm wrench)on the top of the spring perch( accessible from each fender well just over the frame rail. Unfortunately, the springs have to come back out to drop the spacer.
If you pull up the install directions for the lift, go to page 47, there is a picture.

 

Adding to my last post, the rubber bumper is self centering and is held in by gravity, no bolts required.
Don’t do it yourself unless you have access to a lift and tools. I was working in my driveway with floor jacks and jackstands and it was the worst part of the whole thing. I am 68 years old and rolling around on the ground on an exposed aggregate driveway was no picnic. I only did it a week ago and I still haven’t recovered.

 

Thanks again @ram_bow for your incredible assistance. So glad I got to the bottom of this with your help. Here is the page you referenced that I’ll share with the installers. I can’t believe they didn’t recognize this as a spacer. Because of their error I thought the OME was too high, and then bought the Dobinson, and paid twice for the install. Will report back on how this plays out. Looking forward to getting this right. Cheers!!

 

A quick update: I brought in pics and the TRD lift kit install page 47 (thanks again for all your help @ram_bow !) with instructions to remove the spacer. Thrilled that the Dobinsons are now installed properly without the spacer and the height is perfect!! 24” hub to guard front; 26” rear: the 2” rake is fantastic. Here are pics of the spacers, I’ll take pics of the truck’s stance shortly. So, so happy things are finally corrected. I’ll be selling these spacers and the OME 2866, the red Dobinsons are just outstanding and the ride feels wonderful. My shop had never seen spacers like these before and didn’t recognize them as such. They removed them today at no charge.
I really think that Toyota cheaped out by including these spacers with the stock rear coils, instead of giving us a sweet new pair of coils. So glad to have these spacers off. Cheers!!

 

I just ordered the 843V springs to go on the rear with the TRD lift. Dobinsons recommend all of their rear components (read adjustable sway bar links, panhard rod, upper and lower trailing arm). Is all of that necessary too?

I’m very happy with the Dobinsons. So much better than the existing coils + spacers that came with the TRD lift kit. I like the 2” rake and happy knowing that my truck will sit level when I tow. The red powder coating on the coils is icing on the cake. Thanks all for your posts, y’all really helped me! I would suggest swapping out coils and ditching spacers to anyone running the stock TRD lift kit.

This configuration keeps the factory rake? Also what tire size are you running?

You’re correct on all counts. 3” TRD lift, removed rear spacer (after epic quest getting installers to identify and remove it!), and replaced with Dobinson C59-841V (50mm-2") 0-110Lb Load. This keeps factory rake. Based on research and experience of @TundraTT we know this will be beautifully level when towing or under heavy load. Fantastic option. Cheers!
