Okay, for the second time in eight months, a squirrel has decided to make its home in my engine compartment, chewing through the wiring harness. Between the two harnesses and installs there will be over $14k involved. Short of machine gunning every single squirrel in a mile radius of my house.... WTF can I do to keep this from happening? The truck isn't sitting for long periods of time. I drive it a couple of times a week.

Peppermint oil has worked pretty good for me. My lives outside and sits for a couple weeks at a time. I put screen over the access holes under windshield cowl. That’s more for mice though. I placed some rodent repellent packets in a few places under the hood and i put peppermint oil on them every couple weeks.

Is that more effective than mixing several drops with water and using a spray bottle to mist everywhere under the hood? I got two bottles of peppermint oil a few months ago and haven't gotten around to applying any yet.

I haven’t tried the water bottle. I figured the straight oil onto a little cloth pouch would stay concentrated longer. So far it’s worked for me.

I was also thinking of cutting up a microfiber towel into small sections, zip tying them in various locations, and periodically applying the oil to them. I might go that route.

Get some feral cats and feed them so they stay around. They will keep the squirrels and rats away

Great idea except they would also probably go after our chickens also.
