Hi All- I have a 2010 Sequoia with AB60E transmission. I am having some issues that also impact the Tundras.

A few times a week, my transmission will not engage in reverse. The lever works perfectly fine, it just will not engage. Sometimes, it will hesitate a couple seconds, then you feel it engage. I also experience hard shifts between 2-4 gears. Most times, the transmission is smooth. I tend to experience the hard shifts right after I had no reverse, but after driving up through all the gears multiple times, the hard shifts go away.

I will also mention that the no reverse has never happened first thing in the morning, it typically is after it has been driven a while and the transmission is up to temp.

I have reached out to local highly recommended transmission shop. The owner said he recently tore apart a transmission on a Tundra having the same issues. He did all the normal rebuild things, but the new Seal Ring Kit would not seal. He said it was the seal that goes on the pump. He is a member of some national associations, and has asked around a bunch for answers. Apparently, Toyota is still experiencing supply chain issues and no one can get seals that work properly.

I called Jasper, to see if they had any rebuilt transmissions. They are not servicing these transmissions at this time due to the supply chain issues.

Has any one had similar experiences and found seals that work?

How’s the fluid level? Has the fluid ever been changed? Any error codes stored?

Welcome to the forum from OKC! You might just have to park where you don't need reverse and live with the other shifting issues until your guy can obtain good parts. I think I would drop a deposit on the cost of parts so he can get them ordered ASAP if there's a decent chance that he can get them within a few months. If that doesn't work, you might need to figure out how bad you want the Sequoia and what sacrifices you are willing to make. FWIW, you are not alone, many people are dealing with parts shortages in numerous ways. Good luck with it all!

Not sure if this is helpful, but there are a lot of used transmissions in the salvage yards that would end up being a R&R instead of a rebuild. Just get one with a warranty. Just a thought to help keep it roadworthy.

These transmissions are not known for failing. Check your fluid level and solenoids before going full rebuild or replacement.

There's a video on the car care nut YouTube channel that will explain transmission fluid check procedure. If a simple drain and fill helps, maybe do two more drain and fills a few days apart and see what happens. Worst case scenario...you waste some fluid. Best case...it works! Decision is yours.

Thanks, I will probably check the fluid levels. I suspect they are fine. The local mechanic said the issue is more likely fluid leaking within the transmission so it is not building up enough pressure when it is supposed to. I have no evidence in the garage of fluid leaks at all. It does have 200,000 miles on it.

From my understanding, it is not just normal supply chain delays. It is that the seals being manufactured and sold in the Seal Kits are not correct. They are hoping someone else starts manufacturing them. Per their sources within the National Associations, there are transmission mechanics across the country dealing with these bad "new" seals.
